The story of the film ’’DEEWAAR’’ circulates around the life of a mother and her two sons. The true essence of the film is revealed through the dilemma of the mother and her helplessness regarding whom should she support - her law-bound younger son, Ravi Verma, who is a sub-inspector or her elder son Vijay who has given himself up to unlawful activities, including his connections with the Mafia world. The mother, beautifully portrayed by Nirupa Roy, tries to bring her criminal son, rightfully played by the then ’angry-young-man’ Amitabh Bachchan, to the path of rightness, however she fails to do so as circumstances have taken him far far away from her. Shashi Kapoor in the role of Ravi has done justice to his character to the hilt.

The mother, Sumitra Devi when at last fails to bring Vijay to the right path, finally takes the decision of standing by her son Ravi. Though she has revealed to everyone that she has always loved Vijay more than she has loved Ravi, but her conscience would never allow her to accept a son who has taken the wrong path as a means of earning his living.

Even in the climax Sumitra Devi tells her younger son Ravi that, ’’Goli chalate waqt tera haath naa kaape’’, meaning, if he has to take the means of using a weapon, his hand should not shake. The tug-of-war of motherhood and a person’s true conscience has been taken to the heightest level by the Director of the film, Mr Yash Chopra. Even the dialogue by Ravi saying, ’’’’Mere paas Maa hai...’’ meaning, I have my mother, is a striking comment, upholding the root of man’s existance, that is, no matter how wealthy one’s possessions are, nothing can surpass motherhood. It is the biggest wealth one can have.

The film ends with Vijay dying in his mother’s arms, after he was shot by Ravi. The scene has moved its viewers to the core. No grief could be bigger than the experience of a mother losing her child in her arms. It draws the audience’s enbedded feelings directly into the surface. The film ’’DEEWAAR’’, undoubtedly, has done a great justice to the true essence of motherhood.
