We went to Dalhousie after visiting Vaishnodevi enroute to Manali.  We took a bus from Pathankot and reached Dalhousie in 4 hrs.  After checking out few hotels we checked-in at hotel Gaurav for 2 days which is behind Kumar Resort (550/-) at the busstand and got a clean n neat room with balcony opening on the valley. You don’t even require the fan here. In 3rd week of May the climate was pleasant.

After resting for a while we booked a private cab for Panchpula (300) from the union office at bus stand.  I had gone through various reviews online about the place and shortlisted only places which would be worth a visit. Panchpula is 3 kms and is famous for 5 bridges and 5 streams which joins at one place.  We can climb a hill to see a waterful which forms one of the stream after flowing down.  Since our legs were aching from the climb at Vaishnodevi, we avoided the climb and roamed around the bridges where few games for kids and the statue of freedom fighter Ajit Singh stands.

Nothing of much importance, enroute we saw satdhara which is a small tap like chilled water flowing from a hill and which is believed to have medicinal properties.  We got of at mall road which is called Gandhi chowk where one lane goes towards tibetian shops and the other goes to Subhash Chowk which is connected to Bus stand.  There are a number of eateries compared to the busstand which has only two hotels which are not up to the mark.  Shopping on the mall road is a costly affair.  From Gandhi Chowk to Subhash Chowk is a 2 km peaceful walk enjoying the mountain view.  The people over here are very friendly and polite as compared to Katra.  Next day we ordered breakfast at the hotel and to our surprise the food served to us was high class and delicious.  Again we booked a cab for Khajjiar(25 km), Kalatope(8 km) and Dhyankund (6 km) for Rs.1300 as Chamba (90 km) was far off and we were not interested.  We later came to know that the union office at Subhash Chowk is much cheaper. We proceeded to Khajjiar and could see the snow clad mountains far off on our way which our driver informed us were of Sach pass(snow point) which was 140 kms from Dalhousie. The driver was very informative.  He informed us that during winter the roads leading to Khajjiar are blocked with snow and one has to come via Chamba for Khajjiar. The first view of Khajjiar took our breath away as though  we had seen the photos online but the actual place was unimaginable.  It is a huge saucer shaped grass meadow with a small lake in between and surrounded from all sides by the pine trees.  The place was full of activities including paragliding, ball rolling, horse riding, etc.  We enjoyed paragliding (300 for small/3000 from mountain with a pilot) and ball rolling (300 pp).  The place had a relaxing affect and we loitered around for a while knowing well that you could not find such a place on any hill station and my 10 yr old enjoyed running around.  There was a slight drizzling while coming back and we witnessed hailstorm for the first time with ice balls falling on our car.  We stopped at kalatope where they charge 200 for entry of a private vehicle which then plies on a muddy road for 3 km to reach the spot.  It is a wildlife sanctuary but you won’t find any bird/animal within sight and could see only forest rest house.  It wasn’t worth a visit as the views from the top are similar to those found everywhere in Dalhousie.  Would suggest not to waste time and money.  Immediately opposite road takes you to Dhyankund which is called as whispering hills as the breeze over there passes through trees and makes peculiar noises.  It is again a 3 km uphill walk till the temple from where you can see the airforce base and the view of the winding roads below is worth it.   After about 6 hrs we returned back to our hotel tired. The place had chilled out after the rains and we required double blanket in the month of May.  Here food consists of mainly parathas of different kinds both for meals as well as breakfast without much options.  Next day morning we checked out and took a bus for Dharamshala which was about 140 kms (6 hrs) away.
