In the world of Internet, Modems are the most important hardware device for obvious reasons. Before you start looking in the market of modem, you have to decide personally whether you want a internal modem or an external modem. In case you are Single Home User, surfing just for mail and have a good machine, I mean something with at least 64MB RAM, PII and Good Phone Line, I say you go for an internal or else go for an external.

Now lets come specifically to D-Link 56K External. The DLink 56K External fax/modem is a conventional device which runs on V.90 and K56Flex protocol for Data Transmission and can support transfer rates ranging from 2400 bps to 56 Kbps. The modem has a very simple construction with 9 LEDs on the front panel that clearly indicates the modem status. The Dax modem comes along with a 12V power adapter, serial cable for connecting to serial ports, a floppy containing the modem drivers.

The modem is automatically detected at windows9x startup, for NT & XP systems, clear instructions are given in the accompanying CD. Loading the drivers from CD is effortless, for the good front end software which detects your system configuration and configures the modem accordingly. The manual includes the technical specification of the modem, and the installation procedure is explained in quite lucid manner, but there is no explanation of AT Command set.

In comparison to Dax modem, D-Link DMF50 hold its forte, as far as transfer rate are concerned. The advantage is that D-link support K56Flex protocol along with V.90 protocol, which(V.90) on practical terms are good in Metropolitan Cities like Delhi & Bangalore, personally, I felt so while using these modem. I would be glad if someone explained to me why. D-link's software is in a floppy, which I feel is a very bad idea.

Overall

The Dlink 56K External modem is the Best I have worked on, though after a long wait I myself shifted too a internal modem. If you are hell bent on buying a external modem, then I will suggest this is the best modem under Indian conditions, which by itself is very varying, as much as our cricket team.
