The city now has some good bookshops that would get you a first copy, first-hand. And if the burgeoning crowd at these shops is anything to go by, MetroMela’s happy to say that Vizag’s literary bug is here to stay and prosper. We can’t really categorize bookshops in Vizag in terms of ranking and one-upmanship, because book buying is a personal experience. But we can certainly give you information that may help in choosing your next book destination. For instance, in Vizag, if Aravind Adiga’s Booker prize-winning novel ‘The White Tiger’ has arrived, you would probably know where to find it. That’s right – it would be at the Pages bookshop! Fast turning into a ‘fantastic’ haunt for book lovers and gaining the reputation of having the ‘latest’, this store is new and numerous - that’s to say that this bookshop offers books and a lot more. Amongst books, you’ve got the best picks of the book world, filling up easy-to-access shelves, along with cozy corners to do a quick read over a friendly cup of decaf(that the store kindly provides free-of-cost). Amongst numerous things, this bookshop has trivia, trinkets and Tantra T-shirts, to name a few. ‘Pages’ is large and is filled with books, book-lovers and a warm staff; and is a fun place to browse at leisure. You can also drop by at parent store, Jyoti Book Depot, for school textbooks, stationery and some educational board games.

If loyalty were to strike a chord amongst the city’s school and college-going population, then Gupta Brothers, in Vizag since 1916, would win hands-down. This bookshop’s three branches have school textbooks of every syllabus, professional books by the dozens, a bit of fiction, CDs and loads of stationery items. Another bookshop, where loyalty works wonders, is the Ashok Book Centre. With an old-world charm that goes with old-world bookshops, this one is a storehouse for Telugu, Hindi and English fiction and non-fiction books. The NCERT textbooks are also available here. Book Centre too belongs to the old-world club of bookshops(fifty-year presence in Vizag). The range of books is from academics to popular best-sellers.
