About the brand
Corona Extra is Grupo Modelo's ''flagship'' beer. It is brewed at their Mexico City Brewery, La Cerveceria Modelo, operating since 1925. Grupo Modelo began exporting this brand in 1979 and it is now available in over 150 countries all over the world, including Canada and the United States. The North American distributor is Procormex and is located in San Antonio Texas.
Appearance
Corona comes in a 12 ounce, clear long-neck bottle. The beer is a straw yellow with a large bubbled white foam.
Alcohol content
At 4.6, Corona is somewhat lighter than most Canadian beers.
Smell
Corona has a mildly unpleasant odor, but this goes away when you add the lime.
Body
A light-bodied beer. Foam does not hold up, but it is meant to be drank from the bottle, with a lime, not in a glass or mug!
My comments
Coming out of Mexico, land of Tequila and Mescal, you might expect their beer to have some oomph too, but it doesn't. Corona is a light-tasting, simple beer that goes well with burgers at a summer bar-b-que or spicy Mexican food. In Canada, the alcohol content is a bit lower than our domestic beer, and so the ill-effects are less if you're out for a long night of drinking.
Be prepared to take some teasing from other beer afficianados who will tell you that Corona is just ''soda pop.'' True, it does have a slightly soda-pop taste with the lime added. And true, it tastes pretty flat without the lime. But if you enjoy a light tasting beer, this is the beer for you. It is especially suited to hot, humid days and nights, and is worth the extra charge for an import.
Another benefit of Corona is that it is not filling or bloating like some of the heavier beers. You can enjoy more, if you are so inclined.
The price is higher than domestics, but I think that it is worth it.
Also, Corona is widely available.
If you are a fan of heavy, dark ales, you will not likely enjoy Corona -- indeed you are most likely one to poke fun at this brand. But I enjoy good quality ales, stouts and lagers and feel no shame enjoying a Corona when the mood strikes me!
