Carl Sagan's ''Contact'' is different from other sci fi books where man meets extra terrestrial,in as much a multitude of fictional and non-fictional material have projected them to be BAD (eg. War of the Worlds - H.G. Wells).''Contact'' describes mankind uniting under scientific research out of necessity when the first strands of the broadcast reach earth from Vega.An international team use the device created from the broadcast design, travel to places and meet people much older than man.The character scope of the story is vast including the conflict between the scientific and religious community and another between the military and the public.A very well crafted story and is a must read for all sci fi fans and those of a philosophical turn of mind.
