Bad management and too many process

Staff Attitude:

My father met an accident on 3rd May 2015 and had been bought to emergency ward in Columbia Asia Malleshwaram around 11.30 AM. He was suffering a major muscle cut injury on his left arm exposing radius with lots of blood leak.

The Columbia Asia hospital staff somehow managed to wrap a bandage around that major injury. We were expecting they will call for a physician who can stitch the cut, but instead the hospital staff asked us to get blood test done, We finished blood test, then they asked us to get ECG test done(What’s the connection  of ECG test for physical arm injury?), we got that test too done.  Now they asked us to get entire body x-ray done.  They took x-ray of shoulder, left and right Humerus, left and right femur, left and right tibia. Even though the injury is only on left radius? I agree they wants to check everything is fine, but when patient is not even complaining of pain in femur or tibia,  a normal person like me knows nothing happened to that part of the body, why do tests for it? Anyway as expected all the x-ray results shown everything is normal.

Now the story still not over, By the time we got all these tests done it is 4 PM. We spent entire day in the hospital standing in queue for getting tests done, the main problem of arm injury with severe cut ignored and unattended.  Nobody did anything to stop even continuous blood leakage, the white bandage they wrapped in the morning completely wet with blood and turned full red.

The staff were only interested in pushing us to get test reports. At the end of the day they informed us the cut requires a plastic surgeon to operate on it, otherwise it cannot be treated. And plastic surgeon is coming to hospital only on next day morning. They suggested us to admit to the hospital whole night just to wait for the plastic surgeon to come in the morning.  We refused and said we stay near by so instead will go home and come back next morning.  Then they suggested us to come in empty stomach with overnight fasting next day morning at 8 AM and get Echocardiography and PAC done first.  Then the plastic surgeon will operate it.  The next day morning we reached the hospital sharp at 8 AM, we informed the reception we need to get Echocardiography and PAC done.  She had no understanding whatever what needs to be done. She asked us to go for Admission room, In Admission they asked us to go for Day care center, In day care center the reception refused, since we still not done Echocardiography and PAC, so asked us to go first floor.

On First floor we went near PAC room and informed we need to get PAC done, the lady said wait until the doctor as he is busy in operating room. We waited for almost one hour, nobody even bothered to ask us why we are waiting there.  At least went back to lady asked her if she knows doctor will take more time? she checked our prescription and suggested us to get Echocardiography done by that time.  So we went to Echocardiography room, the lady took payment and asked us to sit and wait.  Now we  waited another hour in from test room, nobody from the test room called us. Surprised by that I went and opened the test room, there were a male and female staff laughing and chit chatting doing nothing.  I asked them why we were not called for test? They said they don’t have echo machine, its in use in operating theatre might take another 30 minutes.  Now we have to go back PAC room, and again nobody in the PAC room? I asked a staff its urgent since my father has BP he cant wait too long without having food. Finally after another 15 minutes of waiting a male nurse/doctor(couldn’t figure out, since he was wearing OT dress) came and asked only two questions and suggested full anesthesia and gave us the PAC documents.

Now we went back to Echocardiography test room, found no machine still, waited for another 20 minutes and finally completed echo cardiograph test. But the lady said doctor shall evaluate the report only they she will give the report, asked us to collect the report after an hour.

So Finally with PAC document we went to day care. The lady in the reception said to go to Admission room and get the estimated cost for surgery.  I went to admission room and asked the them for the estimation.  The lady informed the estimated cost Rs. 45000/- with a list charges which are not included in the estimation. All these are for one cut on left arm? Anyway with the estimation I went back to day care center, the lady asked me to fill a long form.  I filled them with all the details and signed everywhere she asked me to sign, even my father has sign them.

Finally she gave me a ward inside the day care facility.  They asked  my father to change to surgery uniform.  Now the time is afternoon 12.30 my father still not eaten anything.  Around 12.45 Dr. Anushman came to see the my father, he said wants to have a look the injury, so he took him to procedure room removed the bandage and said it’s a normal cut just stitching them with local anesthesia is more than enough.

Finally I took some breath, and agreed to him.  He asked my father to take food and he will get ready for procedure in 30 minutes.  After sometime he finished the stitching in just 30 minutes and he the patient can go home.  Dr. Anshuman seemed to be a gentleman who did good job.

While I was paying my bill a nurse came handed over Echocardiography test report, which nobody even had a look which was totally waste.  With all these incidents what I can make out is:

  1. The well known Columbia Asia hospital not even a physician who can stitch a small injury in emergency.

  2. The hospital staff do everything they can to squeeze money out of your pocket. The suggested unnecessary tests, even suggested to admit to hospital etc. for minor cut on the left arm.

  3. Too much process in the hospital leaves patient and their relatives have no idea what’s going on.

  4. The staff are careless, I didn’t see even a single staff who really cared about the patient.
