Out with the old, in with the new.

I just had my new refrigerator delivered today. My old one served me well for many years, until alas, it too had to go to refrigerator heaven.

I'd like to pass on a few tips when you buy a new refrigerator.

Start with the basics. Know exactly how much room you have for the new one to fit into. Know the color you want and the cubic foot of storage you desire. Remember, if you chose a color other than white you will have to pay extra. Beige, green, gold cost about $100.00 more, black is about $250.00 more and if you want stainless steel, well, that'll cost you about $400.00-$500.00 more. So chose wisely.

Next, shop around ! By all means check the advertisements. Many stores sell the same item with up to a $100.00 or $150.00 variance in price.

Look for features you want and need. Don't buy a refrigerator on the basis of features. If you don't use a lot of ice, don't purchase one that dispenses ice (and water) on the outside of the door. That will save you about $175.00. And don't get one with an automatic ice-maker if you really don't need it. Another $50.00 savings.

Make sure the shelves can easily be removed for readjusting storage areas and for easier cleaning. Also remember, glass shelves look nicer, but, the air circulates better when you have wire shelving.

Don't forget to check the shelves on the door too. Are the shelves wide enough to hold jars and bottles?

The freezer to is an important factor. Top freezer or bottom freezer? That's up to you. Side by side?(freezer on the side) I don't particularly like side by side. There is usually less freezer space. Also make sure you get a shelf in the freezer, to make storing items easier.

Lastly, price. You can purchase a refrigerator(approx. 18 cubic ft) for about $450.00, or one for $800.00. Look for the features you need! Buy a trusted brand. A refrigerator is suppossed to last many, many years, as my old one did (20 years!)

So, good luck on your purchase. I hope I helped you out a little.
