  1. Looking out for a refrigerator? And don?t know where to begin with ? With a tons of brands in the market place, and a variety of features coming with each one, you may find it hard to find the refrigerator, which would be the best one for you.2. BudgetRefrigerators range from Rs. 7500 to Rs. 150000. The size and features affect the price. 3. Overall Capacity? Overall capacity is the total capacity of the refrigerator exterior cabinet. The Overall capacity is not an indicator of the capacity of the interior cavity (where food is actually stored), nor of how much space the refrigerator has to offer. As a thumb rule, you could reduce 8% to 10% from the Overall Capacity to get an idea of the actual capacity of the refrigerator. The capacity is measured in liters? To give you a rough idea a family of 2 members would require about 160-200 litres. Add 20 litres for every additional member. ? Although Overall Capacity is the basis on which most refrigerator models in India are sold, Net capacity would give the consumer a correct estimation of the actual usable capacity of the refrigerator. 4. Defrosting System 1. Defrosting eliminates the build-up of ice (frost) in the refrigerator and freezer. Too much ice formation reduces the storage space available in a refrigerator and reduces its cooling efficiency. All refrigerators need defrosting. Frost-free : Frost-free refrigerators have an in-built thermostat, heater and timer that activates the defrost cycle every 2 hours and removes ice build-up in the freezer. Automatic defrosting : Automatic mechanisms defrost the fresh-food compartment automatically, but the freezer section would still require manual defrosting by using the auto defrost switch in the refrigerator. Defrosting would need to be done once the ice build-up is more than ¼ inches thick. Models are priced at Rs.7500 onwards. Cyclical defrosting: In the case of cyclical defrosting, the defrosting function is activated every 8 hours by a timer. The defrosting cycle lasts 20 minutes and the melted water evaporates automatically. Models are priced at Rs.15000 onwards. Manual defrosting : Both the refrigerator and the freezer would need to be defrosted by switching off the power supply, manually. Defrosting would need to be done every time the ice-build-up in the freezer is more than ¼ inch thick. 5. Deodorizers6. Number of doorsDoor designs come in various styles as follows. a. Single door b. Double door c. Triple door 8. Shelves/boxes This would probably be the first thing that you would inspect when you look at a prospective model. Yes, it refers to the arrangement of shelves in a refrigerator. Shelves in a refrigerator could be typically made of plastic or wire. Solid shelves are easy to clean and contain spills. Contemporary designs have shelves that are adjustable, split, sliding and contain spill guards. Number of shelves/boxes: If you are particular about having things organised in a proper way, larger numbers of shelves and boxes would be the right option to go for. Number of cabinet shelves: Utilise every bit of your refrigerator capacity by going in for a larger number of cabinet shelves. Number of freezer shelves: Stacking up all the frozen food one on top of the other makes the freezer look untidy and is also inconvenient. Keep your freezer looking tidy and organised for having a higher number of freezer shelves. Number of refrigerator door shelves: These shelves run along the width of the door and may be separated by smaller compartments, covered compartments or egg racks. Refrigerator door shelves prove to be very handy and all items stored here are easily visible and accessible. Adjustable shelves :Adjustable shelves allow the users to position the shelves inside the refrigerator as per their convenience, allowing for a great deal of flexibility in the manner in which you wish to utilize the storage space. Besides, they make the task of cleaning easier and convenient. If you have a huge variety of container sizes, opt for refrigerators with adjustable shelves. Other featuresQuick freezing component: A Quick-freezing component may be available as a small colder compartment within the freezer or as a knob that allows you to adjust the temperature of the freezer and make it cooler to allow quick freezing of foods. If you are a party person or need ice regularly at a short notice, this feature would be particularly useful for you. Door lock: These are simple key locks on the refrigerator, which prevent children or unauthorised persons from opening the refrigerator without supervision. You would definitely want to have this feature if there are kids, servants and people on a diet in the family!! Removable/fixed egg rack:These are trays with concave depressions, which can be fixed or removable. If you are a non-egg-eater, you can go in for removable egg racks and utilize the space that would otherwise be a waste. Separator for vegetable and fruits:Separators help organize your refrigerator better. A separator in the crisper also helps you store more variety of fruits and vegetables and prevents the softer ones from being crushed under heavier ones. If you are a highly organized cook, you would be happier with a Separator. Temperature control:There are two types of controls: Digital and Dial. Usually, a knob or a dial sets the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer compartment. High-end models may have digital read-outs that show the actual temperatures. Freezer lamp: This lamp lights up the interior of the freezer everytime the freezer is opened. This makes it easy to locate items. If you have well stocked freezers, you will find this feature useful. Reversible door swing: The reversible door swing option allows you to change or adapt the door swing of the refrigerator from left to right or from right to left to suit your requirement. This facility is useful if you are undecided about the placement of your refrigerator or need to change residence frequently. If your work requires you to change homes regularly, this feature allows you to easily fit into any kitchen. Clean back: These are coil-free refrigerators and have condenser coils mounted at the bottom of the refrigerator and not at the back (as in most old refrigerators). They are easy to clean and provide a safety cover for the compressor. If your refrigerator is placed in your living room, a clean back looks better since the black coils at the back are absent. Open door alarm: Open door alarm is an alarm that alerts you if you have kept your refrigerator door ajar for a long period of time. Open door alarm helps conserve energy if you are prone to leaving your refrigerator open due to oversight. After Sales Service Having gone through the features, lastly examine the after sales service provided by the offer. --Is it satisfactory enough to you? --Is the call or service centre network of the manufacturer/dealer accessible enough to you? --How long is the warranty period offered? --What parts are covered under warranty? --Will extra warranty be provided at an extra charge?
