It is Important To You

If you work while you are going to school you can do so much more than earn some extra spending money. Working will help you to gain experience, establish some references, and expand contracts in the community.

A regular income, even if it is only minimum wage, can help to make a difference. A part time job will also help you to develop your work patterns. Future employees will use this to help them know how you will get along with other employees and to see that you can get to work on time.

Work and school do not have to conflict. In fact, you can find ways to make your job and your schooling compliment each other.

To get the most out of your search for that perfect part-time job, take some time to figure out exactly what it is that you want. Describe what it is your dream job would be. Do this as if you had no money worries or anything else to interfere with your choice. Next, make a list of your job skills. With your list of skills in hand, go through your local paper, go to the library, or go to your career counselor and find out which jobs go with your skills.

Remember, some of the best jobs are never advertised. Your best sources in your job search will be people. These sources could be friends, relatives, or fellow students. Ask around and tell everyone that you know that you are looking for a job. It is most important that you tell people who may be able to create a job for you about your search. Many times jobs are created right on the spot simply because someone with potential showed up and asked. Some students even create their won jobs. This can be anything from baby sitting to computer consulting. What about a lawn mowing business?

Another thing that you can do is make a list of several places that you would like to work. Then go to each place that is on your list and tell someone there that you would like a job. The people that you talk to will probably laugh at you and tell you that there is not a job available.

Do not get discouraged. Ask to see the person in charge of hiring and tell them that you want a job. They may also tell you that there is no job available. Keep going! Ask to fill out an application and to be considered for future job openings. Make sure that you ask if you can come back to check for openings.

Before you leave, make sure that you mention that you are a student. Tell them why you would like to work there. Explain why you would be an excellent employee. Tell them that you are trustworthy, loyal, courteous, kind, and cheerful, Let them know that you could start work at any time.

Now they can see that you are more than just an application. You are a person. The next time you meet you will not be strangers. Finally, remember to check back---soon and often.

Keep in mind that when you are a student, the purpose of a job is to support you and your educational goals. If the job is in your career field, that would be great. If not, remember that it is a purpose.
