Getting a part time job can be a wonderful learning experience for someone just starting out. It can help you choose which types of jobs you may or may not be interested in.

If you already have an idea of what type of career you may be looking for, try to find something in that field for a part time job if possible. This could help you to decide for certain whether or not you would really like to do this for the rest of your life.

As a teen, I worked in the fields of child care, restaurant/hotels, education, automotive, and construction. Not all of these fields were paid positions, but I did get a taste of these occupations nonetheless. I found out early that I had no desire to spend my life working in the hot kitchen of the restaurant/hotel where my mother worked when I took a part time job there for a year during my highschool years. I discovered that this was just not something that I enjoyed doing, and I would not be happy working there.

I learned a bit about construction and automobile repair through my father who has spent the past 49 years working for the same construction company, and repaired cars in his spare time. I was always happy to help him out with some of the simpler tasks of repairing autos, and as a teenager I worked alongside of him when he built our home.

In highschool I worked as a tutor tor some of the younger children. I spent many afternoons and evenings caring for children while their parents worked or ran errands. I always enjoyed working with children and continued along those lines for many years beyond graduation.

I think the best part of getting a part time job is the ability to experiment with your abilities, as well as your preferences where careers are concerned. Of course, ask any teen and they will surely tell you that the money definitely comes in handy as well.
