Just Married

Marriage – a sacred institution to most of us – when two individuals from different paths of life agree to pave a common way and tread on it through the ups and downs of life.

The giver of the Gifts for a Newly Married Couple(NMC) should keep this in mind and select wisely – choose something by which the NMC would remember you long after the “Just Married” sign fades away.

I too once was part, albeit miniscule, of an NMC and cherish some of those gifts given by my family, friends and well wishers. Over the years I had my share of frustration and helplessness at trying to find that ideal gift either to a sibling, family member, friend or colleague and presented below are some of my thoughts(read ramblings).

I am forever indebted to the person(s) who have invented the Wedding Registry – Sliced Bread in comparison, was a nice to have “convenience”. As soon as I get the invitation, I make my way to the store, scan the aforementioned registry, choose and buy the gift within my budget – before you can say “Mangalyam.” or “I Do”.

First decide whether you would like to give a common gift or individual gifts. Typically if you know only one of the couple, a common gift is advisable.

The NMC is all set to start a new life and any helping hand towards that is well appreciated. Here is a room-by-room list of possible gift ideas:

# Kitchen: Pots and Pans, Dinner Sets, Bowls and Plates, Cups and Saucers, Silverware, Pressure Cookers, Electric Grinder(blender), Cooking Range

# Living Room: Decorative pieces of Art, Lamps, Pictures

# Family Room: Pieces of Furniture, Cushions, Music System, Rugs, Wall hangings

# Bedrooms: Bed clothes, Lamps, Clocks

# Study: Books, Book Shelves, Office Desk, Chairs, Office Supplies

# Bathroom: Shower Curtains, Potpourri, Rugs and Mats.

# Garage: Storage Boxes, Work Shelves, Tool Boxes

# Yard: Decorative pieces like statues, fountains

# Gift Cheque or Cash: This will be handy and the NMC can decide what they would like to buy. You can also join a group and make your contribution.

If you are planning on giving individually to each one of them, here are some ideas(typically this is if you know both of them):

# Clothes: Shirts, Pants, Suits for the Guy and Saris etc for the Girl

# Watches: one for each one of them of the same make and design. This is my personal favorite.

# Jewelry: The choice of jewelry for the girl is unlimited and is directly proportional to the depth of your pocket and for the guy – maybe a ring or a chain. This is a demand from my siblings and close family.

# Fixed Deposits: Certificates of Deposits in each of their names.

# Vacation Trip: If you are feeling generous(and your finances allow you to do it), book a vacation for the NMC – there are many packages available to choose from.

What about OMC?

Unfortunately the newness of an NMC is not ever lasting. For an OMC – Old Married Couple – send them a card(through mail or e-card) wishing them on their marriage anniversary day and for certain couples call them and wish them.

Do not fall for the age old adage that thought is more important than the gift. Penny for your thoughts.

  • Hope these have been helpful to you in some way.  Here is wishing you a less stressful gifting experience.
