After my review of the movie "Children of heaven" now it is "Children of men".
Of all the visions of the future movie audiences have been treated to over the past few years, the world of
Children of Men may be the most frightening and allegorically effective yet.
The sci-fi deals with the idea of human extinction. In the year of 2027, women are no longer fertile. Due to that, the world is in chaos and people now migrate to wealthier countries. Heavy guarded soldiers and fire cover the entire world. Former activist Theo (Clive Owen, superb) is a man who already gave up hope. However, after being kidnapped by his ex-wife (Juliane Moore, powerful), he discovers the last hope for mankind: a mysteriously pregnant woman.
The film itself contains a large amount of action and aggression as it shows the repression of immigrants looking for new life in Britain and the way the masses are dealt with reminds the viewer of totalitarian regimes such as Hitlers Germany and Stalins Russia, however the action is portrayed brilliant, at times with just the sound of rapid gun fire in the background to intimidate and give the viewer a sense and perspective of the location in which the characters currently stand. The Coup DEtat scene shows the masses rising up against the elitist minority and gives the viewer a large sense of satisfaction; however this is culled quite quickly with the bleak and up-close killing taking place of those who are both guilty and innocent.
I started watching this film with no expectations and was left wondering what would challenge it for the Best Oscar going next year. Alfonso Cuarons directing is hard-hitting, beautiful and brilliant. Clive Owen steals the show with his emotional rise to the protagonist of the world and the supporting actors just build upon his performance and the film as a whole.
