A brief description of the book Chicken Soup for the Soul

Introduction

Story telling is an art required special skill but writing story may be more difficult. This book has done enough justice to spread love and peace when it is required most in this time of the millennium. In one or two cases, it is rather difficult to understand the actual intention of the storyteller. Anyway, it is a good book.

My elder son, who is away from the family staying in hostel in Pune, sent this book to me. He liked the book and wanted us to read. He is missing all of us, so may be suffering from homesickness, and as a result liked some of the very touching stories.

About the Book

This book of 101 stories is complied by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. They are professional motivational speaker and consultants of many companies and organizations. These two gentlemen have their own style to express their views, most of the people liked it, and so they are famous.

The book is divided in 7 chapters covering – On Love, Learning to love Yourself, On Parenting, On Learning, Live from Dream, Overcoming Obstacles, Eclectic Wisdom.

A quote from the book – “by Mother Teresa”

Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to next door neighbor …Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.

First story of the first chapter “On Love” start with this quote. All 23 stories tell us about the value of Love and Affection. Smallest of all the stories, may be of 100 words only, “The Gift” is the most emotional one. The story “A Brother Like That” is very well written. “Bopsy”, a story of a boy suffering from terminal leukemia, kept me silent for some time, I could see tears on my wife’s eye.

Second Chapter, “Learning to Love Yourself”

-------------------------------------------

This section is having eight stories to motivate many to live a better life. It is important to realize the true essence within us. Stories like “Start With Yourself”, “My Declaration of Self-Esteem” and “The Rules for Being Human” are interesting.

Next chapter is “On Parenting”

------------------------------

A quote from the book – by “George Bernard Show”

“Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to the country and to the mankind is to bring up the family.” This is self-explanatory and tells us our responsibility as a parent or a member of the family. There are eleven very well written stories. Do not miss the last one by Kahlil Dibran – I think I have to think seriously about my own way to look at it.

Fourth chapter is “On Learning”

-------------------------------

Once again a quote, this one is by Pablo Casals. “You may become a Shakespeare, a Michaelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?”That is the moral of this section.

Next section is “Live Your Dream”

---------------------------------

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”Many of us forget this very simple and easy to understand moral.

Henry Ford said, “ Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” I should have known this twenty years ago but anyway not to late. The story “I Think I Can” may be ‘a must read’ to most of us.

The sixth chapter is “Overcoming Obstacles”

-------------------------------------------

Friends, this may be the need of the hour for many of us. Henry said, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” All knows success story of Henry Ford and he is the right person to comment on Obstacle. Writers of this book have chosen some very no-nonsense quotes. Some facts complied by the authors of this book in “Consider This”, worth a read.

‘Don’t Be Afraid To Fall’, tells me “Don’t worry about failure. Worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.”

Summary of the career of Abraham Lincoln mentioned in ‘Abraham Lincoln Didn’t Quit’, is a valuable information. ‘Run, Patti, Run’ by Mark Hansen is very inspirational one.

Last chapter is Eclectic Wisdom

-------------------------------

From the story of “Two Monks” –

A monk helped a well-dressed girl to cross a river and after that the conversation of the two monks is as follows

“ Surely it is not right to touch a women; it is against the commandments to have close contact with women. How could you go against the rules of monks?” The monk who had carried the girl walked along silently but finally he remarked, “I set her down by the river an hour ago, why are you still carrying her?”

We all carry things in our mind without any reason and get depressed. Let us have positive attitude and understand the true meaning of the rules.

Last line of the story 'Sachi' –

A four-year-old girl asking her just born brother “Baby tell me what God feels like. I’m starting to forget”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conclusion –
Jan Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen have done justice by including very good stories and quotes in this book. As suggested by them take your time and read the book when you are not in a hurry.
Have a nice day
