Why are so many people discussing them? Why are they so popular? Why do they have such strange names? What?s so great about Chicken Soup anyway? To get the answers to this and more? I bought a copy
of Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul. Enter superhero music?
Summary
101 Stories of Changes, Choices and Growing Up for Kids Ages 9-13. At least, that?s what it said on the cover. So what about the chicken soup? Wasn?t this a recipe book? I decided to buy it, since I was on a school trip to a book fair and we all had to go back to the bus in ten minutes. Back at school, we weren?t doing anything, so I turned to the first page, and read the story, entitled Where in the World is Carmen? I admit it, I was hooked.
In a few minutes I had already read several stories. I finished it, and put it back on my bookshelf for one year. Then, in the summer holidays, when I was re-reading all my dog-eared books, I read it again. I was just as excited and interested as the first time; reading the stories time and time again seems to make them special.
The chapters by which the stories (usually 2-5 pages) are sorted are: Achieving Dreams, On Friendship, On Family, On Love, On Death and Dying, On Attitude and Perspective, Overcoming Obstacles, On Choices, On Tough Stuff, On Changes, and Eclectic Wisdom. In addition to the stories, there are quotes, comics and poems.
My Likes and Dislikes
My favourite story was by far, Dusty the Wonder Dog. I just adore the tale of the dog whom is used as a pillow by babies, and who walks the older children to school each day, barking before letting them go. There were also many other stories which were very excellent. Some I could identify with; some helped me in hard times; some I found simply interesting.
I really liked this book, Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul, written from the perspectives of preteens for preteens. All in all, it gives you a feel-good feeling when you have finished the last page.
