Good Subject, bad execution

Chakravyuh is a well intentioned movie. But eventually it falls prey to the call of the ‘saleable’ elements of Bollywood. The ‘yeh dosti’ which is the recurring theme of the movie, should have been in the background and the Maosit jing-bang in the foreground. Sadly, they exchange places.

So you have two good friends(Arjun Rampal and Abhay Deol). One of them(Arjun Rampal) with a beautiful wife(Esha Gupta)who is great friends with her husband’s friend. One friend(Abhay Deol) goes bad. It’s not very clear in the movie as to what was the inflection point. And then there is a classic faceoff with one of them ending up dead. Haven’t we heard this before umpteen numbers of times?

The movie excels in its technical aspects. It has been shot in Panchmarhi and Bhopal which makes the locations very-very authentic on the screen. The camera work is so good that at some places it makes you feel as if you yourself are in those woods among the people.

Abhay Deol excels in the role of an idealistic, follow the heart kind of a guy. But one would probably expect more from an actor of his caliber. His expressions if you reckon his earlier films(think Oye Lucky, DevD, ZNMD) sadly seem unchanged. There is hardly any difference between his expressions and dialogue delivery from his earlier films. In this film he had a golden opportunity to show his transformation from a happy go lucky guy to a hardcore Naxal who would not blink twice before blowing up a police station. Alas, in both the roles his dialogue delivery, pitch, intonation remains the same. It’s makes a fan like me sad.

This movie has other actors with caliber but who have suffered due to a lack of screen time. Manoj Bajpayee(area commander ‘Rajan’) and Om Poorie, as the ideologue behind the movement, are two of them. Anjali Patil, a gold medalist from the National School of Drama has played Juhi, an aggrieved naxalite. Juhi very well portrays a soldier who follows orders and lives from fight to fight but does lack a larger perspective. A very well made start from her and we pray to the almighty that she not be type casted, something that we have seen happen so often in Hindi cinema.

I would probably call this a missed opportunity. Prakash Jha picked up the right topic. But ended up surrendering ground to the commercial elements of Hindi cinema. What he has done well is bring ‘Capitalist’ interests face to face with those who are the owners and occupiers of land. And he has not very subtly shown the selfish interest that politicians have.

I would probably give this movie a 2 on 5. It makes me sad to see a good subject wasted or rather not appropriately utilized.
