I read this book over the past summer, and I must say it was amazing, by far one of the best social commentaries I have ever read... and believe me, I live for stuff like that. Admittedly at first glance the book is a little hard to understand, but after a chapter or so you get used to Mr. Heller's sketchy style; he moves from one flashback to another whether they are relevant to each other or not. In this most peculiar work Heller points out the ridiculous, generalized, and often insane nature of government and common instilled beliefs. Throughout the book you debate whether or not the main character (Yossarian) is completely sane or just too sane; my conclusion was that everyone but Yossarian was out of their mind, whereas Yossarian is viewed as insane by his peers. Joseph Heller makes a wonderful mockery of institutional structure, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
