In 1996 my children insisted that my husband and I buy a car that would serve us well and be safe. Since we are obedient parents, and with some financial help from them, we purchase a new Volvo 850 sedan.

We had enjoyed this vehicle, feeling safe and had a comfortable ride. Notice, I said ’’had’’ since on October 20th, my husband passed out while driving our car. We were going 70 mph and proceeded to go down an embankment, fly over a ravine and landed on the roof of the car. All 4 passengers walked out of the car!!! We were all wearing our seat belts and, since the Volvo has a reinforced roof, we sustained minimum injuries (from the seat belts).

I have to tell you that if we were riding in a lesser car, I wouldn’t be here to write this critique.

Well, now we needed a new car. Guess What!! - We bought a used 1996 - 850 Volvo Sedan. It’s a cream-puff and I feel so secure knowing I’m driving one of the safest cars on the road.

When considering purchasing a car, first and foremost consider the safety features. Secondly, consider the resale value of the car. A Volvo, decently maintained, will have a life expectancy of over 150,000 miles. Third, consider what you can afford to spend on the car and project spending an additional sum of money to cover some unexpected expenses.
