Before someone buys a Laptop/Notebook or for that matter any other item, I would like to share a few thoughts with him.

I am into comp business and am in constant touch with comp market. What I am about to say might look out of context to this article, but its very much in context with Consumerism for sure.

I would like to get into the basics first. A product, irrespective of its kind, its basically made up of same ingredients as any of its counterparts - for example a computer is going to have a processor, Mother board, hard disk, cabinet, cables etc and this is going to be true for all computers. So if you buy a branded computer - Say a P4 / Mother Board / 256RAM / 80GB HDD / CDROM/ FDD/ Cabinet/ 15’’MONITOR/ K.Borad / Mouse configuration, it will cost you around 25, 000/-, depending on the kind of sub-configuration you opt out for. Now if the same configuration is purchase without a brand name, (i.e. assembled computer), then the same configuration will cost you around 15, 000/-. Now this difference of about 10, 000/- is the goodwill of the brand, which may vary according to the reputation that particular brand enjoys in the market.

I would like to make all of you aware of some of the facts about computer:

-> Technically speaking, even a branded computer is an assembled computer, the inside components majorly have an’ Intel’ processor, Mother board of a company, Hard disk of some other company and so on, what the ’brand tag’ has done is that it has acquired license for selling computer under its registered brand name, then they assemble the computer, place their sticker over it and then sells it in almost double of the price than its actual cost.

-> Almost all of the new computer parts comes with guarantee on them, which start from 1 year and can go as far as 5 years.

-> If some part of the computer gets damaged and is under guarantee period, then this company acts like middlemen between consumer and the actual manufacturer, gets it corrected or replaced as the case may be.

CONTINUED…….(pardon me, I often fin myself short of time.)
