This was great fun, the perfect antidote for the upcoming finals week. I would say, watch it with friends and family, its perfect for a fun night.
This movie, as told to me by a friend
who had read Pride and Prejudice apparently stuck pretty closely to the plot. You have the average Indian family where the mother of four daughters is trying desperately to marry them off to eligible, wealthy young men. Lalita and Will Darcy first meet at the wedding of a friend, and they get off to a bad start with Lalita thinking that he is an arrogant snob who is belittling Indian culture. Her older sister Jaya, however, hits it off immediately with Darcys best friend. The plot goes on from there to show how pride and prejudice can mess things up romantically.
I understand that many people would/could/have been very offended with this movie, and I can see why. The portrayal of the mother as someone who has nothing more intelligent to do than arrange marriages all day is somewhat over the top, and the marketplace scene is quite hysterical...but! It was very funny if you didnt think of it being real or a realistic portrayal of Indian culture and society. I have to say, I and my friends nearly choked when the men started dancing at the very beginning of the wedding scene. Its a movie, its for entertainment, not a documentary, plus its supposed to be based on a book about a society that has been gone for a few centuries...so I would say, dont take it for real, and enjoy. The music and the lyrics are hysteria-inducing, they arent what I would call art, but they are funny, especially the No life without wife.
My friend also pointed out that Darcy is portrayed as the average clueless, stumbling tourist-ish American. *shrug* Stereotypes work both ways.
In conclusion, dont take it too seriously as something realistic, and enjoy the movie!
