The crazy and weird habits of a book-lover.

There is something about a book which acts as a catalyst to your imagination. You may not have gone out of your country, state or even your city, but if you're well read, then you can usually bluff your way out of any potential embarrassing situation or sometimes even manage to impress people by putting them into a frame of mind which says that you've "been there, done it".

I love people who're well read. Its just a trait that I want my friends and even people who're close to me to have. For me, if a person close to me is well-read then I perpetually have the right to talk to him about anything under the sun, or ask him for opinions on subjects or problems, personal or professional which may be difficult for me to solve by myself.

I can bask in the sun knowing fully well that any reply, suggestion or opinion which will be proffered to me will be done only after contemplating the adverse reactions which may pop up if the suggestions given to me are followed. It is like having a series of rally lights on my head showing me the direction ahead, when all I had by myself was a puny little flashlight. Thats the power of having well-read friends. Thats the power of books.

More often than not, all I look for in any new friend I make is the ability to have an intelligent conversation. The subject of the conversation may be anything from the "Tata Nano to the Nano-robots to Barack Obama's administration policies - to double-de-clutching a car- to the advantages of implementing Value Added Tax in lieu of Central Sales Tax". If you have even working knowledge about everything, then you're sure to leave an impression on a lot of people.

People who love to read have a lot of habits in common, I've got some which might be considered freakish or downright plain ordinary. I'll start off with the most weirdest one. Whenever I buy a new book or magazine or anything literaly, I open a random page of the book, mostly the middle page by cutting it like we cut a deck of cards, and smell the pages. It feels heavenly. Even the books which are old will somehow give off a vanilla essence which you can close your eyes and revel in. Pages like that of the Readers Digest, smooth and glossy will smell just that....... smooth...... and glossy. You can literally smell the gloss with your nose with more often than not, a tinge of bannana essence to it.

If you're still reading and havent considered submitting a written request to the MS administration to transfer me into a mental institution, then i'll tell you about some other habits of mine. Something else I often do is that, when i'm reading fiction and I get to an amazing plot being opened, or action sequence, or a car-chase scenario, I start to skim the pages. Reading them, but not one at a time, but 4 lines at a time from left to right, because i'm so eager to know how exactly the situation ends that I dont let my brain find the time to read the descriptions but want to get to the end of that particular scene as soon as possible. Then when finally, I do so. When, finally I have the knowledge of what has happened at the end of that particular gripping scene, I come back and read the middle pages at leisure. I dont do that often, but only when I cant resist.

I also love to read my old books (fiction) while having lunch or dinner. And the books have to be the one's that i've already read. I read them over and over, so many times that when I finally decide to exchange it for another book, i've not only memorized every character in the book, every scene and every narrative, but I can also give you a "reference to the context" of any line you pick up from the book. I can tell you who said it, to whom it was said, when it was said, why it was said and at what point of time in the story it was said. There was this book titled "The Last Frontier" authored by "Alistair McLean". I've read that book over so many times, that the pages have all now become yellow and crumble at the slightest touch.

Some books which I start, but to my detriment, I find later are not interesting are hard to finish. But still, time after time, month after month, I start them, hoping every time that my interest will be revived in the book, but to no avail. Every time I leave the book midway and then start it again a couple of months later. Acting in such a manner, I have somehow managed to complete all the books I have started till now, albeit one titled "The Chapman Report". I've also reviewed that book before so all those people wanting to start it, be warned! I strongly recommend you dont start it, especially if you have this habit that I have (wrongly) imbibed!

Last, but not the least, whenever I finish a book, I have an inclination of comparing it with other books written by the same author. If they're not upto the standards, set previously by the same author, I probably never touch another book by the author again. There have been times, that i've broken this rule, but thats only when the next book the author writes gets raving reviews from the literary circle. And sometimes the book also does manage to live up to the hype generated around it!!!

Habits, some good, some bad, some freakish, some ordinary, some irritating, some outright dumb! But these are what I have, these are what i'm made of. However one fact cannot be denied, one outright truth. When you start to read books, you'll feel like you're just seeing the end of a tunnel while travelling in the train. Not light outright, but a glimmer of light. But when you finally go on reading and reading, one day you'll be out in full sunshine. You'll still not be satisfied, because even if you're now out of the dark and gloomy tunnel into the sunshine, you're far far away from the sun. And the more you read, the more close you'll get to the Sun. You'll never reach the Sun, but the journey of trying to reach the sun will be an amazing experience in itself........

Happy Reading!!!!
