Blood Brothers is a short movie, starring Siddharth, Ayesha Takia, Pawan Malhotra and Pankaj Kapoor. It is directed by the critics’ favourite
Vishal Bharadwaj. It is one of the four short films produced by Mirabai Productions (Mira Nair) and all these four short films are about AIDS Awareness. The other three films are Migration (starring Shiney Ahuja, Sameera Reddy and Irrfan Khan; directed by Mira Nair), Prarambha (staaring Prabhu Deva; directed by Santosh Sivan) and Positive (starring Boman Irani, Arjun Mathur and Shabana Azmi; directed by Farhan Akhtar). Of all these four films, I found Blood Brothers the best, because it entertains as well as enlightens. More about it later.
Migration was too dark and too slow though it gave a wonderful message. But the problem the minuses outweigh the plusses in this movie. Prarambha was in Tamil with no sub-titles so unfortunately couldn’t understand it! Positive was also beautiful but somehow it failed to give the message loud and clear.
The story of the movie Blood Brothers: Arjun Dutt (Siddharth)’s life was going great-both at the personal and at the professional front. He had a beautiful wife (Ayesha Takia) and a 4 year old son, whom he loved very much and they also equally loved him. He was working in an advertising agency at a high post in a big metropolitan city. One day, after doing a blood test, he came to knew that he is HIV positive. He gets the biggest shock of his life. He realized that he must have got this disease after having a one night stand with a young woman whom he met in a pub some time back. What worried him is that his wife (Ayesha Takia) was pregnant and she and their yet-to-be-born offspring may also have contracted the disease. He did not had the guts to see the horrors of future and therefore left his house without informing anybody to an unknown place. The money which he had was limited which soon got over and therefore soon came a time when he had to spend his day and nights on streets. On one such day, he was bashed up by a gang of local goons. Dr Bhootnath (Pankaj Kapoor) rescued him and gave him the necessary treatment. After meeting Dr Bhootnath, Arjun got another big shock.
Blood Brothers is just of 18 minutes and therefore, with such less time, the movie moves quite fast without wasting time on unnecessary things.
What is most interesting about the movie is the story. The story is quite weird but it’s interesting and Vishal Bharadwaj, the director has done proper justice to it. The best part of the story is the twist which is totally unpredictable. After seeing the twist, you may think that the story now onwards is predictable, but No! There is one more twist, making the experience enjoyable.
The wonderful part was the last scene of the movie. The movie ends up giving a good message and you feel that you have watched something sensitive and meaningful.
The film is entirely on Arjun Dutt, played by Siddharth, who has given a fabulous performance. Even his heavy emotional voice helped in shaping his character. Ayesha Takia was okay and didn’t had much to do in the movie.
Pankaj Kapoor was great as the ‘Doctor-cum-Shayar’! Pawan Malhotra didn’t had much to do in the initial portions but was quite impactful in the final and the crucial scene of the movie.
Mathew Robbin’s story was quite interesting. However, the film gets confusing at times due to its screenplay, direction, and editing. Sure, the trio wanted to do something creative but they ended up confusing the viewer a bit. But overall, they have done a good job.
Vishal Bharadwaj’s direction was perfect but little confusing at times. But he has done full justice to the story.
On the whole, Blood Brothers is a great short film with a good message on AIDS. The film will surely not disappoint those who’ll watch it.
