Blood Diamond is a diamond and its a huge solitaire at that. The movie has a tight script, great cinematography and powerful performances. Performances are really damn good.Whosoever said Leonardo DiCaprio can't play tough guy....well he better check out this flick.
The man is in form and how.Djimon Hounsou is damn good.Infact some of the best scenes have Djimon in the frame but not Leo DiCap(When Djimon finally finds his son but his son refuses to acknowledge him and the scene where Djimon talks to his son and tears start flowing down his eyes just after they find the diamond).Jennifer Connelly gets a very small role compared to the two lead actors....but...she does a good job of it.And yes....her eyes speak a hell of a lot.David Harewood as 'Captain Poison' does a good job.
The script is tight like a new elastic band(sorry, couldn't find a better comparison). It provides edge of the seat action and anxiety while showing a comprehensive picture.Full marks to Charles Leavitt for that.Eduardo Serra captures every frame with utmost perfection. The rebel attacks in the city, the scene when the journalists' bus stops just after an attack has taken place, the scene when they find the conflict diamond are shot really well.
A few questions:
1)How does Captain Poison get out of prison and rejoin the rebel camp?
2)Why is Jennifer Connelly sympathetic towards Leo when she's such a hardened journo with oodles of experience?
My verdict:This solitaire is going to be a tough competitor for top slot at the Academy Awards.DO NOT MISS.
