Story:

It is always a pleasure to read one of Margaret Atwood's Books. In Canada, she is considered one of our National Treasures.

The Blind Assassin, is a Novel, that takes place in Canada, between WW I and WW II.

A Taste Of The Plot

Iris Griffen decides to write the history of her Family. Iris is married to Richard, and their love is quite puritan.

We see how a Family can go from being rich to becoming poor. We read about first loves, sexual encounters, marriage, divorce, losing loved ones and being lonely.

Iris dwells on the loss of her Sister, Laura Chase, who was driving a Car that went over a Bridge. She doesn't know if it was an accident or a suicide.

The collection of writings she left behind became a posthumously published novel, that lead to fame and a cult following.

Oh dear, Lara has two lovers, and this is not readily accepted in Canada, during this time.

One lover tells her a bedtime story, The Vanished city of Zycron. The story is about a blind Assassin who lived in Zycron. He falls in love with a mute Woman.

The other lover is a drifter, and he is in hiding. We never know what his name is, but I have a hunch it's Alex Thomas, who Laura was once in love with.

Iris, is quite old when her House is sold, and is now a Nursing Home. Iris had one Daughter, Amie, who died a long time ago. Sabrina, is her only Grandchild, and she won't talk to her. This leaves it up to Myra, who is Iris Friend, and helps her.

Iris wants Sabrina to know about her heritage, and that is why she wrote the story.

I never tell the end of a story, but I will tell you that the ending of the Book has one of the best endings I have ever read. I was crying, during the last 2 Chapters.

The Best Bits

Iris and her Sisters had a very odd life. the lived in seedy Hotels or dark, drab Apartments.

I loved reading the snipes that Iris made at the Socialite, Winifred: ''She was done up to the nines as usual, but despite this she was looking quite tatty. Well, she must have been pushing seventy, and after a certain age her style of maquillage does tend to make you look mummified. She shouldn't have stuck to the orange lipstick.''

What I Thought About

The blind Assassin & the Mute, show us that even if you have a disability, there is a way for you to over come it. The do use each other, but in a very interesting way. Their story, is a mirrored image of Iris and Richard, who were not in love.

Iris & Lara, lives seem to merge, into one person. Are they the same???

What I Felt

Perhaps because I know a bit about Margaret Atwood's life, I kept wondering if she has masked the history of her own Family, withing this book.

My Family lived in Canada, during this point in time, and I could relate to the tales, that wove their way though this Novel.

The Author

Margaret Atwood was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She wrote he first Book in 1961, (Double Persephone), when she was 19. Since then she has written over 14 Novels, a few Children Books and some Poems.
