Black is one of those rare movies which celebrates creativity and soaks the audience with emotion which are pure, eternal and so human. At the end of the movie you feel like standing and silently applauding
the director for giving you the experience of watching this movie.
It is difficult for me to review this movie objectively. All those who have seen this movie have praised it and gone ecstatic on the performances. Today let me just analyse why this movie had been able to connect to so many people.
The script as we all know is the feet on which any good cinema stands tall. The script of Black is well structured into two distinct phases. The first half introduces the Teacher and ends with the scene when he finally is able to crack the impregnable wall around the Students mind for light to come into the till then black world. The character of the Teacher is defined in this phase by his actions and methods through he achieves his objective. The second half dwells more on the relationship between the Teacher and the Student as years passes by. The circle of life is complete when in the last scene the Teacher becomes the Student and the Student becomes the Teacher. The way the script is inter woven around the story which mainly talks about the courage of human spirit is definitely the strongest point of this movie.
Next comes the cinematography. We understand that the tones and theme of the movie has been defined by the director in the beginning. But to execute that into perfection is not an easy thing. The quality of the scenes which we saw has been taken to another level alltogether only because of the cinematography. The line between cinema and art in Black is blurred thanks to Mr Chandran.
Performance of all the lead players has been extraordinary. I feel all fine actors could give their life for all the roles written in this movie. Casting by the Director also need to be appreciated. Ayesha Kapoor in the role of the young girl is simply brilliant. Dhritiman, Shenaz, Nandana does their part flawlessly. Rani Mukherjee has given one helluva inspired performance. She should be and must be proud of what she has done in this movie. Amitabh Bachhan for the first time after so many years has been given a real character to play. The restraint in his acting can only be attributed to the Director who have not strayed from his vision. Amitabh creates an unforgettable character whose heroics are all internal and not apparent externally.
Regarding the direction I can always say that Sanjay has directed this movie with a lot of passion and understanding of cinema. His directorial craft is at its zenith in this movie.
The only jarring note which crept in ths movie was the old man getup used by Amitabh in the sanitorium. The scenes in the end somewhat lost their poignancy because of this.
Black end of the day will be remembered and watched by millions of people for a long time. Artists who contributed in this movie can be content that their names and talent has now become immortal.
