The novel THE BINDING VINE is a spectacular panorama of lives of women in India. It comments grave issues related to the life of a woman. She has been suppressed by social and moral taboos. She has been expected of being submissive in all her roles in the society. Whether she is a daughter or mother or sister, or wife, the society expects her to be meek and submissive. The novel also highlights very important theme of helplessness on the part of a woman.
The social situation in India does not allow a woman to come open in her defense. Many a times, injustice to a woman is seen as a punishment to her due her behaviour. That is the reason Shakutai blames her daughter Kalpana for being frank and modern in her clothes. The very thinking gives us idea of patriarchal dominance over thoughts all those who come in its canon irrespective of whether the person is a male or female. It's one of the finest novels I have read in my life. Feeling bit sorry for not able to comment more on the novel due to time constraints.
