It is a nice attempt by mr stephen mitchell. But in my very own personal view, as a student of GITA, I must say that unless you know very well the chief orator Krishna, in the book, you will miss everything said by him in the book. same as bible's words has the authority only because they are said by jesus or for jesus, to whom we have belived to b the god's son.
similarly , you will miss eveything, if while reading gita you take krishna anything less then a God in human form , which is written thousand times in the book "Mahabharata" of which gita is just a tiny portion.
Actually wether you believe it or not, if you consider the main speaker of the book, the lord krishna, as just a super human being, and not the god, then you will miss the whole idea. it would look like as something said by a very egoistic person. Because at number of places he has said by a force, that surrunder to me, then I will take care of all your sins.
He has used the words "I" so many times, and cleary has ordered to pray for him. But the universal acceptability of this book is because of the fact, that he has not said, that you should not believe other ideas, but have said, all ideas will bring humans to the God, Sorry for having a little different idea.
