’Ahh beefeater gin’. I had just poured myself a pint glass of this, my favourite gin, when i decided that i must review it on mouthshut.com. Having had a long day presiding over three funerals
all related to the same unfourtunate chip pan incident I had nothing else on my mind when driving home than dashing to the drinks cabinet and divulging in some of this magnificent tipple. I discarded the robes and sat in my papal embroided underwear, turned the fan heater to hot, put on some soothing hits from Nine Inch Nails and enjoyed a refreshing glass of beefeater.

The drink itself first originated in London. Although it is rumoured that the English gentry stole the recipe from the starving Irish as they raped and plundered the green hills of the Emerald Isle. It was one of the first gins introduced to the public and has been popular ever since it was first poured back in the late 18th century. The name came from its founding father, Lord Henry Mountsaboy who was renouned for his passion for fine silk and ribbons. Lord Henry picked up the infamous nick-name ’beefeater’ after an incident in his local hostilery ’Jordans of Westbury’ where he made his way through several dozen pounds of beef in one night. He went on to invent his favourite tipple at one of his legendary pink shirt nights he hosted at his country mansion. Lord Henry was the son of a wealthy spice merchant and was never short of a few shillings to splash out on fine clothes and parties. However these social gatherings came to an abrupt end when Lord Griffin of Leeds showed up one night and decided to put a halt to proceedings, taking a dislike to the noble party-thrower.

Lord Mountsaboy or ’beefeater’ as he became known, lives on though having put his name to the famous gin to which I partake in drinking several nights every week. I think we can all learn something from Lord ’beefeater though and that is why i still preach from the pulpit today that ’to make friends is to make wealth but there is always a Griffin to ruin it for everyone’
