Like all avid wildlifers we were up and ready by 5:15 AM.expecting the gypsy to arrive at any moment. As the time ticked by, 2 of us(Total 5 guys) walked to the Tala gate instead of waiting for the gypsy driver. He finally arrived at the rest house at 5:50AM and reached the gate with the rest of the guys at 5:55 AM.
The gates open at 6:00AM and the last thing you want is to be the 46th vehicle to enter the park. That's what we got. Even after havng completed the formalities previous evening, our gypsy driver Mr. Mohan Singh(Vehicle no: MP 40 C 0325) made sure that we were late.
The reason for this is simple. The full time guides are available on a first come first served basis. By delaying us, he ensured that his friend, Bala, a village yoke got a free ride in our gypsy as a "Guide" and Mohan Singh in turn got his cut.
The guide's abilities. well. I don't have words. I am told that the best driver, in terms of interest that he himself takes in the forest and sincerity towards the tourists is - Mohan Yadav. Please don't confuse the worst with the best. Be cautious. You can specifically request the gypsy union about the driver you do not want/ want.
