Baazigar in simple terms means CHANCE TAKER, those days I was taking a chance with my Rs.25 to go see this film with a hero called Shahrukh Khan and a girl called Kajol. I am of those people who did not see Fauji or Circus on the TV, so I had no knowledge of Shahrukh Khan. I am sitting in this big A/c Theater knowing not what to expect, the other comforting fact was there were 85 percent people in the theater who were like me.
DANG ! This guy grabs me with water flying in all directions from his hair, A guy borrowed from Delhi to Mumbai, nothing is keeping this guy bound to earth, he is unattached, utterly free, independent, original in his strut, his dialogue delivery, his acting. I am shouting to myself, this actor is being himself, he is nobody's clone, what a daring thing to do in India. In India acting independent is the biggest challenge, this is a land proud of its old heritage, how come a new thing be good. To sustain yourself you should become part of something in India, otherwise you are shun, some people who are attached to the old will call it a treason , but Shahrukh Khan took a chance to be free.
People of India who are like me, love originals, our roots of old help us grow into new, it is hard, but it can be done, supporting him and surpassing Shahrukh are 2 cute girls in this film, Shilpa and Kajol both with baby fat evident on their cheeks dancing to new tunes with wheat colored skins gave their best shots. Both girls has physical drawbacks, but they were remarkably original with their show.
Kajol went on to become a icon, dark skin did not keep her away. Shilpa gave rhythm to all budding artists of India, now we have her clones abundant, BAAZIGAR is the foundation for the success of 3 people, Shahrukh Khan, Shilpa, Kajol. Because this film gave us 3 good people, it should become part of India heritage. Kajol with the twinkle in her brown big eyes captured millions of hearts permanently.
The story of this film has some tears, some unexpressed love, some forgetfulness laced with sweet beautiful songs, all hummable yesterday, today, tomorrow. If there was a film made for Shahrukh Khan, this was it. Baazigar not only made Shahrukh Khan but it was made for him also. The freshness in acting was new air on a calm beach, Shahrukh was sinful in his independence, very endearing in his confidence, there were glimpses to the heights this vastly talented actor will claim in his approach to super stardom, new at that time, he inspired 150 mimicry artists, 150 stand up comedians of India, they based their audience grabbing acts on Shahrukh's stammer.
After Baazigar Shahrukh became a familiar face on number of magazines and his face was evident on many silver screens in Indian homes. I sit up still today with respect and full attention when this great actor is delivering his dialogues or acting his scenes.
Baazigar was my initiation ceremony into the fan hood of King Khan, I don’t regret my fan hood, he deserves it. Even though I am a believer who say nothing is greater than my maker. I don’t admire anyone too much in fear that my maker will become angry with me for raising mere mortals to a status unjust. But Shahrukh has earned his status. He has my admiration since Baazigar. Shahrukh acting lights up the screen, even his failed films has 1000 percent Shahrukh Khan.
Today he is rated a superstar, because he sells, he has immense talent, he has carved his admiration in India hearts. Even today there are more than 1000 crores invested in ventures where he is a part. BAAZIGAR is where Indians took their chance on shahrukh khan.
Baazigar was a film which set trends, it changed parameters of roles film heroes could play in India. Baazigar opened negative roles to heroes domain, so this film opened up gateways for likes of Emran Hashmi and John Abraham. Heroes stopped acting like comedians, they reinvented themselves with negative roles after this film, this was a bold experience but it paid off very well.
This film actually wiped lot of gloss from the role of heroes, it made Hindi film heroes human with flaws. The age of UPRIGHT and all sacrificing males were gone, enter the human look. Doing bad and still earn fans in India was the contribution of this film.
This film was mind bending, it gave whole of India an eye to see all our lead actors in bad acts, weakness, just being what they are, you can understand this today very well by the negative roles being done by many newbie without hesitation, before this film, the concept was no go. So a new chapter for heroes and new chapter for film goers, this film trained India to accept new trends in life. This film readied India for the advent of yuppies from abroad.
We cannot look at films for their songs or their comedians, our films are actually catalysts to huge masses, making silent unseen reactions and changes in the brains of us Billion Indians. Films like Baazigar taught India to experiment with new ways, break the mindset, come out, rebel and succeed. Baazigar showed the path of chance taking to new India.
