Auto or Mani?
May 07, 2008 12:14 AM 19850 Views

I am 19 and passed my Manual test 2 years back. Obviously I enjoy driving manuals because you can feel the car more, however, automatic is a lot more comfortable, most modern autos have way smother gear changes than manuals depending on driver skill, but if your young like I am then the auto is way smoother.

Its 2008!Modern autos are nothing like what some of these reviews say, I am only 19 but I have drove 3 manuals and 4 autos and I must say yes the auto will eat a little more fuel between 10-15% more, however, acceleration is what takes up the most fuel when driving and inexperience and aggressive driving will take a lot of fuel up which balances the fuel consumption out between manual and auto, this is because in a manual the acceleration is a lot heavier after each gear change hence more fuel usage.

Traction control and  Sport settings!I know these controls take a lot of stick from some drivers but they do work, more autos rather than manuals come with these two settings in the modern day and they do help improve grip on wet or icy roads and depending on the car manufacturer the sport or speed setting will allow for a lot faster and aggressive overtaking and acceleration also balancing out the difference of speed between the manual and auto.

Overall if your looking at buying a manual or auto it depends on these things.

Auto                                    Manual

Comfort                               Excitement

Older                                    Younger

City                                        Long Distance(better Fuel Economy)

Inexperience                       Experienced(auto is safer for young drivers!)

Lack off concentration      concentrated(Safety Reasons)

As a Trained Mechanic I hope you will take my advice but do read all of the reviews here as I may have missed some points but don't believe everything you see that isn't covered here.

Safe Driving, Dave
