Auto  Vs  manual isnt much of a debate as the both fulfill their needs in different classes.

Automatic gear :

----------------------------

This is most often chosen by three segments of people

1.) The young inexperienced driver who doesnt need to panic in traffic situations with the gear shaft and clutches.

2.) The traffic infested city dwellers for whom it would be a pain to keep a leg constantly on the clutch while negotiating traffic.

3.) The rich crop as they dont mind in shelling out extra bucks for the automatic as well as the drop in fuel economy associated with it either. This class makes up the 70 % of automatic car consumers.

Manual gear :

----------------------------

This is often chosen by these 2 segments of people

1.) The young college students and the driving enthusiasts who would rather have the real feel of driving a vehicle with the manual gear as its more fun and adventurous.

2.) The mileage consious will never consider an automatic as it reduces the fuel economy and not to add the extra costs involved in getting one.

In my personal opinion an automatic would be an efficient and practical choice but it would take out the fun in driving. Its widely known a cars true power and acceleration can be known only in a manual transmission car. And the maintenance issues of an automatic car is higher than the manual.

I would suggest getting an automatic transmission on a highly powered car like a V6 or V8 for the rich to be driven around in , where one wouldnt be able to detect the slower acceleration and one wouldnt look for mileage in such a car anyway.
