Audio Books Vs. Paper Books

How could you even compare the feel of a good book, the ability to flip back to pick up something you missed, or refresh. The smell of the binding. The childhood memories brought up by the sight and
smell of those books. Remembering sitting on my fathers lap as he read to me

When I try to listen to audio tapes I fall asleep almost instantly. The tape drones on and on and I can never return to just where I left off. If I fall asleep reading a book usually I fall right on the place I left off and can easily pick it up again.

Imagination is such a big part of reading. A lot of that is taken away by the interpretation of the reader on the audio book. And the impression given is not always mine.

I like to read and savor a really good sentence. So I will pause and think about a phrase or a description, not possible if the audio is continuing. Or if I don’t understand or want to reinforce a line I will re-read sometimes just a few words, some times an entire paragraph, sometimes using different emphasis to put a different meaning into a group of words.

I had a really good book ruined by a poor reading. The reader was dull and boring
and when I read the paper version I got a whole different light. I almost missed out on what became one of my favorite books, because of someones poor rendition of it.

I am not an author, but I think if I were I would not like to have my book read by someone via audio tapes. Even if it meant getting less revenues.
