Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani deserves no more than that one word of description...decent...and that too is a better way for me to say average, no more and no less. Astitva is actually one of the better serials on T.V. nowadays. And no wonder, it deserves to be. When we have serials like Kkusum, Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Yeh Meri Life Hai, and Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai going on, I really don't think anyone will have a reason to raise a finger on what Astitva has to offer.

In a nutshell, Astitva is good when compared to weaker competitors of its genre (romance/relationships)! Yet on the same hand it turns out to be a pretty mediocre fare at times when looked upon as an individual show. Especially when seen off late. And the off late downfall allows other serials, even from different genres, like C.I.D. to have a better impact with the slick sequences and thrills they offer.

Astitva in its own right started off wonderfully. Abhi, Simran, the way they fall in love, the way their story unfolds, the way their personalities affect their marriage, the way their past interferes...every single idea was laced into the narrative with extreme delicacy and the viewer was able to see one of the most sensitively treated serials on T.V. right infront of him/her.

Gradually, Astitva too slowed it pace down, obviously to have a time extension on T.V. Nothing wrong with that, especially when it still moved much quicker and in a more practical way than most serials of this genre. Astitva remained popular for quite a long time, and I believe it still is. But the point where I believe the serial totally lost focus was where everything fast-forwarded by 18 years. Abhi, Simran, Urmila, all turn old and their kids grow up. I mean this was one of the most unwanted tracks on the show, at least according to me. Although still the directors try to give their best to entertain the fans, it's pretty clear to many people in my knowledge, including my self of course, that this extension was surely very uncalled for. Furthermore it doesn't suit a serial of Astitva's class. Kkusum, Jassi, and Yeh Meri Life Hai doing it makes sense, since their directors seem to be having big problems regarding their stories. The programs start somewhere (such as Pooja's Bollywood aspirations in Yeh Meri Life Hai) and end somewhere else (Pooja's family problems)!

Astitva no doubt does a better job than that even with the 18-year fast-forward track to me, but still it plainly doesn't suit it. It looks like a forced in extension in otherwise a serial that used to be driven by the delicacy of emotions. Abhi and Simran easily should've been re-united at that point in time. Abhi thinking of Neha and walking out on Simran again made no sense as now 18 years later the two are back again. Doesn't it hurt Neha now? I mean such faults on the directors' part looks out of place, especially when the directors in question are those who gave the viewer some of the best sequences to have graced the small screen.

Otherwise the entire cast and crew is pretty okay in their job. Performances, in fact, deserve special mention for being one of the best that there are on the small screen right now. Many of the actors deserve a break in Bollywood too.

Niki Aneja Walia as Dr. Simran does a decent job showing that she's putting a good deal of effort to make everything look authentic on her part. Witnessing her win an award on one of the shows for this serial shows that her efforts have been a success! Harsh Chhaya as Manas, the guys who switched in the roles of Sonu, the girl playing Sia, Alok Nath, and all the supporting cast including cameos by Mahesh Thakur and Parmeet Sethi, do good jobs in their roles.

The best part about the 18-year forward angle is watching a brilliant actress in Yuvika. Playing the younger Aastha she's a plain revelation. She looks beautiful as ever, bringing her best-face award winning features from India's Best to Astitva. And no doubt she proves with her extremely efficient performance that she's not merely a pretty face, but also a wonderful actress. Thumbs of to the hardworking young girl.

Another winner all the way in Astitva, probably the guy who the show belongs to is Varun Badola. In the role of Abhimanyu Saxena he steals the show. He romances good looking ladies (Simran in her good old times, and Kiran) and also has ample time to demonstrate his efficiency while acting on relationships (with Neha who was another great actress in her role)! As an individual, from his start as an angry-young-romantic photographer, to the mature and stylish old man Anand, Varun does all his parts with extreme sincerity and class underlying in his performance. Surely one of the people, along with Yuvika, who deserves a break in Bollywood, right NOW!

Overall, Astitva is all what is described above. Read the review and do COMMENT!
