I first learned of Angela's Ashes on opinion site. I first heard of it about the time that the movie was coming out. Although I don't usually go for sad subject matter, I was curious. I read a number of reviews and was cautious to choose those that did not reveal a whole lot about the plot. I was intrigued about what I read and this research compelled me me to make my first purchase online from Amazon.com. Just a few days later, Angela's Ashes arrived at my doorstep.
Usually I read non stop, gobbling up the text. I carry a book around with me everywhere I go, just in case I have a few minutes down time to read a few more pages.
I was not able to do this with Angela's Ashes.
Although I did carry it around as I made my many rounds as the driver for four teenagers, I had to put it down at times. The tale was overwhelming at times and more than I could handle. People did notice it and many made comments about it. Some said it was depressing, others said it was wonderful. I was still reserving judgement. The intensity of the story and the emotionally wrenching tale was very hard to take at times. The story was good enough, however, to be willing to stick it out and learn the final outcome.
If you are not familiar with the story, Angela's Ashes is the memoir of an American/Irish boy who tells about his family's life and the issues that they face. Much of the story IS so sad and most unfortunate. Still, there is an amazing resiliency that shines through the depressing murk. Because of that, I find this work so inspirational. It makes one wonder how an individual can survive such a life. Frank McCourt doesn't just endure, he triumphs.
I did like Angela's Ashes? I have no doubt that this is a book that I will pick up and read again. I would only recommend this book if I was able to qualify the intense things that happen in it. I would have to say that the reader should definitely be emotionally mature.
The ultimate test? Would I buy the sequel?
