Choosing Restaurant/Hotel for food is never a problem. We can get many places which can serve variety of national and international food. Living in capital city of India for two years, we had different opportunity to visit many Restaurant and provided we don't look to money we spend, treat is enjoyed most of the time baring expectation. But if some constrained such as location and cost are to be considered without compromising with quality, then cooking in home is easier than finding such place.
In last 18 months, since we joined our M.Sc. course, we had never been out as a class. So I thought my birthday time to utilize it as such time. I wanted to treat my class mate with good food and of course in affordable amount. Sorting out many list, we came through one preferring South Indian food and choosing Andhra Bhawan Canteen in Ashoka Road.
Location:-
For Delhites, the location is in central Delhi. Traveling long distance for dinner might not be feasible, but for those(both locals and outsiders) who has a plan to visit India Gate can surely give it a try. Its nearest Metro Station is Central Secretariat and 10-15 minute walk from Metro Station. Go toward Raisina Road. you will see a big Circle, take a side towards krishi bhawan, and walk through the Dr. Rajendra Prasad road till you see a circle junction of Ashoka Road. Andhra Bhawan Canteen is inside Andhra Pradesh Bhawan. The place is simple one for Good food and Cheap food.
Timing:-
7.30 pm to 10 pm for Dinner. Call the canteen to know other timing.
Food Details:
In Veg Dinner, you get South-Indian thali which you get in Unlimited for just hundred bucks. Those who like South-Indian food will accept it without any question, but people who don't try South-Indian dishes can also go for it. They will like it. South Indian Veg thali consists up ofplain rice, 2 veg curry, Dal, Samber, Curd and some few more dishes.
You will find them tasty and worth of it. The food quality is very good and they are hygienic also. As cleanliness also matters, they have made the place clean and you will surely love it. I will recommend it if you want to have good vegetarian food.
In Non-veg dinner, what you get few pieces is Non-veg curry which is not too much worth as veg dinner. They are in limited amount and you can choose some other place for non-veg food. Still, if you want to give it a try to non-veg to enjoy its veg dishes, you can give it a try.
Serving:-
The canteen has a huge place where at a time about 150 people can be fitted. So, even if you are going in mass number of 15-20, you will find place. But as the place is really popular and it is said that they feed about two thousand people during one meal, you might have to wait for about 10 mins to get your turn. Be careful during weekend.
But as it comes about hospitality and serving, the place is really good. you don't need to shout at waiters or wait for your turn to come. You start getting food within two minutes of getting in table and even during the meal, they will constantly keep a watch on tables and they themselves keep asking if we need anything. They keep adding food and you keep enjoying them. There is another reason for this also. As I said, the place is famous and many people come to see it, you may not get relaxed time of talking and eating. There was a instance when we tried talking about few of our activities during meal, and they kept us asking if we need anything more. They want us to concentrate on our food. LOL!(So, in one way, the place is not for couple who keeps feeding their partner and finish their dinner in not less than one hour).
But, for group number of friends(or even couples) who want to enjoy dinner, they can quickly have their dinner and go to India Gate for rest of evening. So as this place is near India Gate and if you have a plan to visit India Gate, you can have your dinner in Andhra Bhawan and enjoy your evening.
Feedback:-
After we completed Dinner that night, all of my friends were really happy for the meal they had. Few were first timers for that place and they were amazed to see food quantity, quality and serving of canteen. They thanked me for bringing to that place. Even I was happy because I could treat them in low price. After finishing our dinner, we had spend our beautiful time around India Gate. It was indeed'A walk to remember'.
You can also try a sweet pan after dinner. I didn't taste it but My friend said it was good. It is just for Rs 10.
