I wasn't expecting much of this book. I just picked it up for some filmy gossip and the book, somewhat, did serve the purpose. An Unsuitable boy definitely gives us insight into Karan's personal life, equation with friends and family and even an overview of the film industry.
The first few chapters in the book are certainly endearing. Karan's family background, childhood and even college-life is quite relatable much to the writer's dismay. Karan's constant need to garner sympathy falls flat on the face because rhetorically he didn't have a'troublesome' childhood like he tried to project in the book.
I cannot deny that I did enjoy the book in the beginning. Chapters like'Kuch Kuch Hota hai' and'Early Film-making years' are thoroughly entertaining. Up until this point in the book, the narrative is quite simple and clean. You understand and become a part of his journey. After these chapters, the book is a sing-song tale of how affable young Karan grows up to become a pompous, self centered, always right, self proclaimed'Star'.
Overall, the book is somewhat entertaining if you are a movie-buff. There are some interesting tit-bits about Karan's life that will make you smile as well. If you are patient enough to read through how Karan'supposedly' changed the tide in the Film industry, I say go for it.
