Reading the experiences of many people who go thru the Chennai US Consulate for a visa I thought I should write my experiences. It bought back fond memories. Well mine was quite a long while ago. It was a steamy hot summer day in Chennai in July 1989 (15 years ago).

A lot has changed from then to now. But some things are the same. Here is what I went thru.

Took a luxury KSRTC bus from Blore to Madras. Reached Madras at 4 AM. Was in front of the consulate by 4.45 AM

There were more than 100 people in line outside. The gates open only at 8 AM.

There was a chai walla in cycle. Had a cup of tea and waited with excitement.

During my times there was a rumour that it was very difficult to get any kinds of visa leave along a F1 visa.

Finally it was 8 am and the gates opened. Not much of security those days.

I was in front of a consular officer. It went like this:

C Officer: What r you going to USA for

Myself: To study sir

C Officer: Do you have anybody there

Myself: My sister sir and she is a Green Car holder.

(I Spoke the truth)

C Officer: Come in the evening after 4 PM and collect your passport

Myself : You mean I got the visa

C Officer: Yes it will be stamped in the evening.

From then on it was one saga after another. Went thru the process of finishing my MBA, then my first job, H1 Visa, Green Card, Marriage, Became US citizen.

Well we did not have the internet or courier service or appointments. It was first come first serve.

In all a very satisfying experience. The officers at the consulate treated everybody very well. They truly represent America and what it stands for.
