Indulges in stereotypes

Mouthshut members maybe aware of my review on ’’Bringing down the house’’ and why I disagree with using ethnic stereotypes as basis for a script .
The movie stirred my curiosity,
since I wanted to know how ’’People Of Indian Origin’’ are perceived by their brethren from the land of their ancestors. It was a disappointment that neither group took the time to understand each other and hence crap like this is made as a result.

First of all the movie fails on a lot of fronts, starting from the fact that it shows Indian kids are being less than ’’fashionable’’ by American standards. Anybody who’s had a good hard look at Indian society nowadays will see how it has become more progressively liberal especially when you consider the society of the American South.

Second, the word desi, is supposed to mean somebody who’s from India, now this guy was born and brought up in the US, and if he’s a US citizen, he’s an American, period. So the title itself is flawed.

Third, the girl in the movie is thought to be a foreigner initially by the hero, which is a slight to the beauty of Indian women. I am sure that there a lot of Indian girls far better looking than the girl in the movie.

Four, the culture of PIOs is considered to be by default ’’the gujarati culture’’ looking at the social event in the movie. This is another one of the biases, towards which the scripwriter leans.

The jokes on the Teaching Assistant are so antiquated that it hardly evokes laughter.

It is too stereotypical to be funny and it tries to address issues which can hardly be called issues nowadays. I would strongly recommend giving this movie a miss, when you can watch movies like ’’East is East’’ or ’’My son, the fanatic’’ which provide a deeper, more cynical view of the problem of cultural differences between different generations.
