Yo!! Thats the way to go! Following Nagesh Kukunoors instincts, other Engineer turned Film-makers are jumping into the foray, making movies what would relate closely to their lives, while also making
it light on the heart and
Sprinkling Lots of Humour to make it an Enjoyable Experience for the Movie-Goer, who is Bombarded with
Boneless Boloneys like Awara Paagal Deewana, K3G, Agni Varsha many others...
The
Brain Child of Debutant Engineer Turned Director Piyush Pandya, American Desi tells the tale of an
American born Indian who leaves home to attend Graduate School. The whole film revolves around with his experiences at the school, the self-realization and eventual affinity towards International Indian Students. Since I myself am at the verge of completing my Engineering Bachelors degree and added to that, am also seeking to pursue my M.S in USA, this film was like a guided tour of the whole process of living out of home, with a steady dose of humour to keep things pretty cool!!! After watching the film, I feel I MUST add it as another reason WHY one SHOULD travel Out of India to study!!
The
Central character in the film is a teenager who is on the verge of completing High School and moving ahead with his academic life. Quite Hip and rightly so, the boy Enjoys American Culture, natural for anyone born and brought-up in that place. Indian traditions are a Mighty Bore for the Stud, who feels Blissful as he heads out into the Independant world where he can finally get rid of the Tikkas on the forehead, Dozens of Relatives, even his own name.....Krishna Reddy.....he prefers to call himself Kris!!! Quite content with his way of life, he sets out to explore life away from home with his best friend, who is an American.
Landing into the university, he gets the first shock of life, after discovering that there is something he cant live with, yet cant avoid!! What is that?
Indians, of course!! His room-mates, all 3 of them, though completely varied in nature and behaviour, are all Indians!! One is a Sardarji called Jagjit Singh, who keeps talking all the time, sometimes funny, but mostly irritation inducing for Kris, another is a Muslim and the
third, like Kris is another American Indian (AI-2) , who keeps yakking with that funny American Accent. The three try desperately to bring Kris into their wavelength, but he simply wont budge!! Kris gets even more desperate, calling up his American Friend, who resides in the other dormitory (American for Hostel), asking him to exhange places in order to make his life easier. Fellow friend has no time to listen to his requests, since there are several HOT CHICKS in his dormitory and he is BUSY running behind them!!
Kris finds hope though, with spotting a Beautiful Girl in the class and asking her out for a Pizza during a party!! Well, well, what do u know, the Second Shock arrives with him coming to know the girl is Indian!!! Now he has to go thru another routine! The girl makes him join the Indian club, watch some really crappy Hindi movies, and above all, learn how to do Garba! He sees this as the right time to express himself and
PLANTS a KISS on her lips during the training! Boy o Boy, some Nerve that guys got! The girl does what every Indian Girl would do, place one
TIGHT SLAP on his cheeks! She prefers to call him ABCD, i.e American Born Confused Desi!!
Meanwhile, Muslimbhai is chased by a girl who is really
FIDA on him!! Despite several attempts to run away, the girl catches up with him! Finally he breaks his silence, saying he wont go after an American Born Muslim because she is Corrupt, in the sense that she must have already had several boyfriends before him. The girl hears this, feels Really Hurt and stops talking to him. Repenting his mistake, Muslimbhai tries to reconcile with her, expressing his apologies. All Hell Breaks down when her parents show up....and.....
So, Kris and his so-called Girlfriend are Cross. Adding to that problem is Another Boy, who has been with her since Childhood. He too is after her! The RAT RACE Begins! Kris patches up with her only to land into more serious problems, thanks to the Other Rat! She starts hating him even further! Now, Kris has to find a way to Make it up and Win her !! He suddenly wakes up at mid-night asking AI-2 to help him out with Garba......and finally all the 4 room-mates end up dancing thru the night!!
Finally its Show Time, the Garba Night and Hero shows up Promptly, impressing Heroine with his Newly-Acquired Dancing Capabilities! Villianbhai also resurfaces, this time trying to Bash Hero up......and getting Thrashed in Return!! The couple live Happily Ever After!! Also, Sardarji, whose father gets Mad at him because he keeps doing time-pass drawing some real Handsome Paintings, patches up with Pa after Pa realises the REAL Talent in his Son! What abt Muslim Bhai? Do I need to even hint you abt that!
The Movie features a Special Character I didnt mention so far. Its the T.A of the Professor who comes to teach the class the first time. That guy Had Everyone
LAUGHING LIKE MAD whenever he entered the frame, what with his Crazy Antics and Open Zips!!! Just watch him do his stuff after getting drunk!! Surely something Not to be Missed!
Another Compliment goes to the
Director of the film,
Piyush Pandya himself. He has handled the script with lot of Intelligence, realising the best way to convey what he wants to say is thru Humour. His Direction feels Confident and Re-Assuring, something rare with Debutants, especially those without Film-Making Background.
The
Screenplay, Music, Cinematography and Editing are the other BIG Pluses.
The Screenplay has Very few or No Loopholes and narrates the story in a manner in the Best Way it could be told. I found myself completely Engrossed into the Happenings and thats primarily becos of the Good Screenplay.
The Cinematography is quite Slick and Nicely done by Renato. The Director too deserves some credit for it is him who Visualises the scene and controls the motions of the camera, before letting the Cinematographer Add his Own Creativity and Expertise!
I dunno who composed the music but its Simply Superb, complementing the scenes very well and offering something different. Just check out the song Baat Ban Jaye and the way its been Picturised!! Bravo!!
Editing too is Razor-Sharp and the movie never Drags at any Moment.
Finally coming to the performances,
Dont quite remember the Lead Actors name, but he has done an Excellent Job, delivering all the Right Emotions at the right time.
The Lead Actress, Purva Bedi has also given a Good performance, though she looks a little old for the role.
The Supporting Cast, apart from these two is the Backbone of the movie and give a Commendable Performance, especially the room-mates!
All in All, American Desi is Everyones Cup of Tea.....just Taste and see!
