This movie is hilarious! Some of the scenes are instant classics--the prayer scene, the burka scene, the grocery store scene. You should definitely buy the DVD and watch it over and over. Having said
that, the performance of the two lead characters arent exactly extraordinary. Deep Katdare,as Kris, looks way too old to be playing a 19-year-old undergrad. As Nina, Purva Bedi could have done a better job.
Well maybe it isnt Bedis fault that the character of Nina is so annoying. Even though Kris is the ABCD, she seems to be kind of confused herself. Like a good Indian girl, she slaps Kris for kissing her. But wait a minute, she was the one who invited him in the first place. Like a good Indian girl, she speaks Hindi. But she speaks it with a heavy American accent. I am an ABCD, and I speak better Hindi than she does. Since she obviously feels the need to lecture Kris about Indian culture, speaking Hindi properly is the least she could do. And she dresses like a.....
What really makes the movie worth watching are Chriss roommates. All of them shine, but my favorites are Ajay and Jagjit. And the feisty Farrah shines. Theres one girl who is proud of her heritage without being downright arrogant.
What bothers me: The smug assumption that Indian culture is superior. The incorrect assumption that Indian culture consists of nothing more than garba. The assumption that ABCDs know nothing about their heritage. And since when did South Indians speak Hindi? Like I said, though, buy the DVD. The main characters are mediocre, but fortunately the movie doesnt focus on them too much.It is completely worth it. Watch the roommates unleash their magic. And the acappella songs are cute.
