While reading this book'American Sphinx' an odd thing happened with me. The more I got to know more about Ellis from the book as it's an autobiography the less I started to like about him. As Jefferson is very arrogant, obsessive ideologue whose success got from the hard work and patience of others and failures are totally unavoidable given his substantial flaws.
I would not recommend this book to others as an introduction to Jefferson for three major reasons. The first, the psycho fable described in the book. Second, the book odd chronology, because his tenure as a secretary of state under Washington and his second term as president is not even mentioned in the book. Third, its not an biography on Jefferson it's only look alike character by reviewing selected portions of his life, primarily the writing of declaration of Independence.
Instead of this book you can walk to your nearest bookstore and get exchanged this book instead of you can read'A Revolution: A Manifesto." or else you can buy R.R. Bernstein's "Thomas Jefferson" as the perfect brief introduction to the life and politics of Thomas Jefferson.
