Please note that this review is only for the non-stop flight between JFK and BOM and does not represent Air India as a whole.
Class of Travel: Economy
Check-in and Boarding at JFK:
Good: Smooth - No hassles, quick, mostly polite staff, on time, no long lines despite of a full flight.
Bad: Due to lack of storage space, just prior to boarding, the Airline made a decision not to allow two carry on bags (usually airlines permit one laptop bag and another carry on item). It was a wise decision as there was a serious lack of storage space in the overhead bins. But what sucked was that Air India did not anticipate it earlier. Maybe they should just make it a policy of not allowing two carry ons in the Boeing 777-LR...that way people would know in advance and wouldnt be inconvenienced.
On-board:
Good: Wide seats, decent leg space (34" pitch"), decent entertainment system (a positive coz it exists on the non stop NY-BOM flights, as compared to other Air India flights), decent and edible food (although slightly overrated), a decent size bottled water provided for each passenger (a great plus due to the fact that airlines otherwise serve a small cup of water every 3 hours on super dehydrating long flights).
Bad: Rude air hostess, lying flight attendent. The air hostess who served us was like a 40 year old frustrated rude school teacher. No thank yous, no excuse mes, and she would treat passengers as if they were pieces of s***. The passenger in the adjacent row double-checked with the air hostess whether the meal which was served to her was a chicken something. Air Hostess response was a 5 minute rude lecture as to how the hell can a stupid dumb good-for-nothing person (the passenger) ask a smart, beautiful, intellectual and sexy person (the airhostess) such a question! I was flabbergasted (sp?).
Overall: A great and very convenient flight....decent leg space, decently wide seats, edible food, flight departing on time, arriving earlier than scheduled, hassle free checkin, no lost baggage.
Best part was that there was no need to get off at some European airport, take handbags to a different terminal, stand in security check in lines, wait for flight, experience unforseen delays, missed connections, blah blah blah.
I definitely recommend Air Indias non stop flight from NY-BOM and would fly again, unless Jet Airways or some other airline starts a similar service with similarly wide seats with a similar seat pitch!
