I originally wrote this the night I watched the film. Sorry for the delay in posting my review. It is a very long review and had no time to sit down and shorten it or post it up....here goes...

Why
did you watch this movie?

It took 5 long years to finally see Madhuri magic back on the big screen. I became a Madhuri fan and a fan of Bollywood at the same time. Because of Madhuri, I got more interested in Bollywood. The moment I saw her in Devdas, I immediately admired her charm, talent, and dancing. The more I learned about her, the more I began to love her as an actress. Well, instead of writing a story about how I became a Madhuri Dixit fan, I should answer the question directly. I watched Aaja Nachle for the main reason many others did: to watch Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s so called comeback film.

Plot

The story is about a dancer by the name of Dia (Madhuri Dixit). She grew up loving dance and living every moment with a smile on her face. One day a stranger comes into her life and takes her away to a foreign land. Betraying her family and leaving her town and art of dance, she starts a new life. Unfortunately, her new life is not what she hoped it would be like. 11 years later Dia is a choreographer in New York. During one of her rehearsals, she gets a phone call from her motherland. A striking news brings her back to her home. Her dance guru falls ill. By the time she gets home, it is too late. But, she doesn’t leave without doing what she feels very strong about. Ajantha- the place where she learned to move her feet to the rhythm of the beats that went dhak dhak in her heart. She hears that the small town wants to replace the theatre with a mall. And soon as she hears those words, only pain dwells in her heart. She makes the effort to meet the MP (Akshay Khanna). After an argument they come up with a deal. Dia must put on a show for the people of Shimla, by the people of Shimla or else the theatre will be replaced. With a desire deep down in her heart, she sets out to find the perfect cast for her musical. The story then proceeds as she struggles to put together the perfect musical that will save Ajantha, the place where she learned to dance and to live.

Cast

Madhuri Dixit-Nene- Where do I begin? Madhuri has proven that she has not lost any of her talent or behind the camera persona and charisma. She may have aged but of course that is natural. You can’t expect anyone to look the same forever. But, she managed to look as beautiful as ever and act as natural as ever. Her dialogue delivery, her dancing, and her expressions has only possibly improved. That could also be because we have not seen her in a long time. I think she was perfect for the role as DIA only because I feel like I know Madhuri well enough. Madhuri and Dia have similarities such as the passion for dance and appreciation for culture. So who else could have played Dia other than someone who probably can connect with her the most.
