Please try to keep a few things from this article in mind before you purchase a used vehicle. Buying from a dealer may or may not cost more than by owner. It all depends on what the car is worth, and who
is trying to make more money. If the dealer gave more than the car was worth when taking it in on trade, chances are they will make up for it when it is sold. If an owner is upside down in their loan, or behind on payments, they may also have a higher than expected price tag. The most important thing is to get the vehicle checked by a certified mechanic. Find out if the timing belt has been changed (if over 50,000 miles). Get as much history on the car as possible (via web). Call the recall hotline for that manufacturer and see if there are any major issues, or outstanding recalls. See if the original owner has a documented history of service on the vehicle (oil changes, tune-up’s, etc.). Make sure it has not been in an accident (it may permanently affect mechanical operation). Anything that is used will require some routine maintenance. Expect some repairs to pop up here and there. The bottom line is to prevent getting stuck with a vehicle that has been abused, or needs excessive repairs.
