Coming of Age
I got my first Seiko on my 21st birthday in Bangkok and it was love at first sight - a lovely understated steel grey metal strap with date and stopwatch that had its dedicated red hand (it was an analog quartz).
I chose it OVER an Omega my parents had selected for me!
(just stop groaning so loudly - I can hear you!)

I was so excited - my first ’fancy’ watch!
All of US$200 (which was a big amount to spend back then).
I felt like a ’real man’ (ok, just let this one slide!)
It totally matched my aspiration of ’speaking softly but carrying a big stick’!
Despite all its flaws, I just grew very attached to it.
In 9 years, I had to change the battery just once and it never conked out on me.

Issues
- The date had to be reset every other month since it would keep going to 31 automatically.
- It was barely water resistant, some moisture got under the glass after getting wet in heavy rain.
- It lost a few minutes every month.
- It got scratched (after I smacked my wrist into a wall while executing a high speed turn in my dorm).

I loved it so much because we had been through a lot together!
I was determined to become a loyal Seiko-san after that.
The next Seiko that I got after much research for my 30th was a new and improved steel with gold trim (the all steel was out of stock).
This was from the Mall of Georgia, north-east of Atlanta.

Features
It had:
- shiny black face (stylish)
- Day & date (very helpful)
- English & Spanish days (not very helpful)
- day/date magnifier (for easier reading)
- 100m water proof so I could at least go swimming with it
- Perpetual Calendar (PC) so no more date adjustments, it will handle leap years correctly well after I’ve turned to dust (2100 AD)
- Florescent hour, min, sec hands and hour markers (glow in the dark - kids think its very cool and keep asking to turn off all the lights!)
- double locking clasp for extra security
So it was a big step up from my previous model which I still keep for emotional reasons but don’t wear any more.

I love the new Kinetic models and hope that by my 40th, they’ll have a Kinetic with Perp Cal (they have not combined them yet)!

They need to add PC & Day functions to this and I’m set for the next decade!

Kinetics (like Rolex Oyster Perpetual or Citizen EcoDrive are ’automatics’) never need batteries. These Seikos store energy from your wrist movements.
Got it all planned out for the next decade or two.
This is my ONLY review that gets a 5/5 despite all the flaws!
This is one of only two brands I plan on being loyal to for the rest of my life.
The other is Aiwa for music systems.

My dream watch
It MUST be a Seiko of course!
Reminds me of this great Porsche ad:
’If you could have ANY car, what COLOR would it be?’
and it shows a Carrera zipping away impling it would HAVE to be a Porsche so that need not even be asked!

Ahh - watch heaven ...
If it can cure deadly diseases and whiten my teeth while I sleep, those would be bonuses!

I hope they start selling them in India soon ...
