Well so far I used to think it is outright unfair to copy English films and make a frame-to-frame copy in Hindi.
But I guess with our large audience unaware of the Hollywood scenario it is alright
to be inspired by English flicks.
And Anees Bazmee has done it all over again.
His last hit film Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha was inspired to the core from the MEg Ryan starrer French Kiss. If you had seen the original, you would have hated the mans guts to make the Hindi remake and take credit for the story and screenplay.
But with Deewangee he goes a step further.
Deewangee too is inspired by the Richard Gere starrer Primal Fear. But the story of Primal Fear ends at the interval after which it is upto Anees Bazmee (the director, story-writer, screenplay and dialogues) and Neeraj Pathak (who shares the credit with him for story and dialogues) to keep the audiences glued to the edge of their seats.
Here again, if you have seen Primal Fear you are not at all deceived by the first half of the film. Cause you know the story already. So Ajay Devgan has committed a crime for which he thinks he is innocent and convinces his lawyer Akshaye Khanna all the same. Akshaye takes up the case as a personal favour to Urmila Matondkar (who is a popstar and has learnt singing from Ajay Devgan).
While the case is going on, the romance between Akshaye and Urmila is also blossoming with some really unwanted and un-musical songs popping up now and then. The songs actually break the momentum of the story.
Ajay Devgan then puts on an act of having a split personality to let him off the hook of murder (again inspired by Primal Fear). Akshaye Khanna manages to let him off the hook but just before he can enjoy his victory Ajay Devgan lets him on his little secret - the fact that he actually does not have a split personality. And he had read about it in a book long ago in his village library (kool - village libraries stock up suck interesting books!!)
That is the point of interval. After which begins Akshaye Khannas struggle to make Ajay pay for what he has done. In a literal tug of war the duo try to undermine each other. A series of interesting sequences here - original for once.
What happens in the end is for one to wait and watch. After all it is a thriller and I shouldnt take away the surprise element.
In the cast, Akshaye is good. Urmila is well ummmm hmmmm ....... The scene stealer is definitely Ajay Devgan. In a negative performance he is brilliant.
For the first time I witnessed the audience actually clapping when a hero was bad-mouthing innocent people! That is the extent of the impact of his performance.
Cant really call it a great film of sorts. But it is definitely worth watching.
