If you have seen a batsman strolling down the wicket, hitting a fast bowler straight to the boundary, it should be Ravi Shastri. He was a very good cricketer, who could not be One of the Greatest, if you
know what I mean.
He is an example of a perfect opportunist, starting as a slow bowler, batting at number 10, and then becoming an opening batsman. Probably, his best is the Champions trophy in 1985.
He is very aggressive in nature. Well, people who seen him in his twilight might not agree, but believe me he is very very aggressive. He is a good limited batsman, but made most of his limitations, hitting hard in his prime. Some how, I do not regard him as a good bowler. His fielding was also not so agile, but then agility was not the mantra during his time.
What impresses me is his cricketing accumen. He had shown a bit of this during his captaincy. I have no doubts what so ever in my mind, that he would have been one of the best captains of India, had he been continued. Probably, the mistake he commited during his playing days is that, he continued to play in Australia despite his knee injury. I thought, had he not played in Australia, he would have been for bit longer. But again, probably that tour was the best of his batting.
He is definitely the most sought after commentator today. His views and comments are just as aggressive and straight as his batting was. I liked two instances during his commentary which would emphasise his aggressiveness and love for India. First, when Rajesh Chauhan hit six of Saqlain in Karachi, he was not in commentary, but was heard louder than any one else that day.
The second one being the latest, when he went on to prove inabilty of Camay Smith to be fair and consistent in Sri Lanka durign the Sourav episode. The way he bombarded Camay Smith once again puts his aggression on front.
