Well, after 3 days the technician turned up and tightened some components of the filter which he said were 'loose'. However, that hasn't quite made any difference to the bad odour remaining in the filtered water. The very purpose of my buying this Pureit Classic 23 Litre Water Purifier was to have a... safe drinking water, but seems the purpose is not served, with tall claims by a reputed MNC company. But for the steep price of RO purifiers I would not have settled for such a water 'purifier'.Read More

Nice post Mr. Karve. I agree that values, interests, and skills are the three key factors contributing to one's most contented career choices. In fact, the latter two, i.e. interests and skills need to be closely linked for a 'successful' career, while inclusion of values makes it a truly 'satisfyin...g' career. I have always believed that parents and teachers are duty-bound to help children identify their innate talents and passions in life, which they can nurture to their full potential for a successful AND satisfying career. But, sadly, these days everyone has joined the rat-race, and success is interpreted as amassing wealth and fame, regardless of what one's true calling in life is. No wonder, many people who are perceived to be high achievers (Bill Gates, Warren Buffet) tend to take up philanthropic pursuits later in life to satisfy their values, as money alone can't buy happiness. As someone has rightly said, giving gives more satisfaction than receiving/accumulating. Wish the youth of today would ponder of this and pursue their true calling in life, which again is very difficult to identify, particularly if one doesn't have unique qualities and happens to be a 'jack of all trades'.Read More

I agree with you @nikhilsamkumar. I had been using a Tata Credit Card for over 7 years (being a Tata employee) but last year when I faced some serious issues about redemption of reward points, they promptly 'expired' my points gradually, and by end of last year wiped out Rs. 1600+ worth points from ...my card a/c. I discontinued using the card due to the ordeal of redemption. A person named Nergish Variava of Tata Capital coordinates with SBI Cards (with whom Tata Cards has a tie-up) but her intervention made matters worse. Finally, I have discontinued the Tata Card and am more than happy to use a Platinum Card from a leading Bank, with options to redeem points from online catalogue of products, unlike TataCards, which only offers redemption thru SELECT partner outlets. They also NEVER share list of Partner Outlets where one can REDEEM points, but their website too only lists Partners where one can EARN points. So much for the big Tata name. Sad to know the Tata Group has become so untrustworthy and unethical over time.Read More

Tata Credit cards are cheats and have poor service standards, despite being associated with the famous Tata Group who carry the motto - A Century of Trust. Unlike my other Credit Cards, I wasn't able to redeem reward points from my Tata Card at many of their partner outlets like Croma, Westside, Tit...an Showroom, as most of these don't even have the EDC machine for redemption from TataCards. Besides, there is no option to redeem online from a catalogue of products as per one's choice (as my other card issuers have provided). So, one has to literally go on a wild-goose chase from outlet to outlet trying to redeem their points, else they are promptly 'expired' by TataCards. After much altercation with them for months last year, I stopped using TataCard and preferred using other cards which offer similar benefits, and also the convenience of redeeming from online catalogue of a variety of items. Would never recommend TataCards due to their poor back-end support, and mysterious redemption processes.Read More

Thanks @Cattie ! While credit card issuers are a dime a dozen, I never expected a reputed and respected business house like the Tata Group to cheat and indulge in such unethical practices. Goes completely against their motto 'A Century of Trust', for the century-old business group. Also, unlike o...ther card-issuers, TataCards don't have any option to redeem points online. One has to compulsorily visit one of their partner outlets (basically all major Tata firms in Retail businesses, such as Westside, Titan Showrooms, Tata DoCoMo Stores, etc. So, if the EDC machine meant for redemption is non-existent or defunct at the outlet one visits, one can kiss goodbye to one's reward points, which TataCards will shamelessly 'expire' periodically. I have shopped at Flipkart.com plenty of times for a long time, but usually items like books or small electronic items. Have always found them to be prompt in their delivery, though occassionally they did delay beyond period mentioned on the site, perhaps due to procurement delays from manufacturers.... However, I feel of late, Flipkart.com has been floundering because of increasingly large volume of transactions through its website. I have always observed and believed that as an organization grows, what determines its efficiency is its robust systems and processes. When a firm is small, minor systemic/process flaws are hidden by personal intervention or workarounds. This is not possible beyond a limit as a firm grows bigger. That's when its processes are tested, and this is what seems to be happening with Flipkart.com. Media reports suggest that they are also cash-starved, making such operational issues crop up more often. Having been setup by two ex-Amazon.com executives, it flourished so far, but has started floundering now. Let's hope they iron out their flaws and remain one of the top online shopping sites in India.Read More

I have been using the Nokia E5-00 handset for over an year and find that though this model was released in early 2009, it is still one of the best business phones around. I have been using Nokia phones all along, and find them worth the money. I feel that most of the drawbacks of the phone you have ...mentioned seem to be specific to your handset, not to this model per se. The keypad is one of the best on any QWERTY phone available at this price. Also, the reception is very good and call quality is excellent (though most Nokia phones have very low earpiece volume, forcing one to use the hands-free headset while commuting or in crowded place). My operator doesn't have 3G license in Mumbai, so have been using email on my E5 using 2G network which works quite well. The built-in T9 dictionary is quite sufficient too. Guess you may need to upgrade the firmware on your handset to see if it sorts out issues faced by you. From personal experience of over 1 year I can say confidently that the Nokia E5 is still one of the best business phones around (a poor cousin of E72). Hence, feel you are being unfair in your review, as your issues may be specific to your handset.Read More

Lucky u ! @Cattie, you are lucky to get away to Goa in this busy month (year-end) ! Goa's one place where people seem to be permanently on vacation, no matter which time of the year one visits it. In these recessionary times most corporate firms make a beeline for Goa for their annual business revie...w meets etc. Great place to unwind !!! Yeah, let's wish Yuvraj a speedy recovery....and add to more confusion on (vice) captaincy within the team ;-) Seems Genelia has made her transition from being a bubbly college-girl to a 'bharatiya nari' post her wedding. HOW LOW WILL ADVERTISING GO, TO SELL PRODUCTS ??

Feb 23, 2012 08:46 PM

No self-regulation by media Yes @Cattie, this ad is absolutely gross and obscene. Thankfully, I don't subscribe to the DNA newspaper, so I have been saved the blushes at home. It reminded me of the Tuff Shoes ad many years ago. Though one can report such obscene ads to the ASCI (Advt Standards Counc...il of India) which is a toothless body, but sections of media will create hue n cry if such advts are regulated - in the name of freedom of expression. But then, in these times of 'Paid News' I often wonder which bit of news is paid and which isn't. Such advts seem to appeal to the so-called Gen Next, or atleast to gain publicity for their shock value (selling by hook or crook ?). There are scores of ads showing young skimpily clad women promoting products used mainly / only by men (all those shaving kit ads will have a women drooling over a clean-shaven man). Some women even appear in ads for males only inner-wear. It just reflects the low standards of decency in society, what with most youngsters using 4-letter words freely with not just their peers, but even elders in the family (and yes, I have seen/heard even girls doing so, so no gender bias here). With parents and kids watching 'unhealthy' programs together(like Bigg Boss), our family value systems have gone down the drain. Yes, I may sound old-fashioned, but programs like Bigg Boss only promote voyeurism not good values. But with many couples having 'outsourced' parenting, they no longer spend quality time with their children tutoring them on our traditionally strong value systems - something the 'developed' West envies us for. Regret this long post, but just felt very strongly about this.Read More

Changing tracks ??? Hi Cattie, Seems you have spared the males of your species this time, and taken pot-shots at your ilk (women, that is) for a change !! It was quite amusing to read though. As for the interesting captions on tees, you seem to have chosen the 'sober' ones as I've seen far worse ...which I'd rather not mention about. Sure, the prolonged winter has abated but will linger on in Mumbai for few more days. So, the shawls and stoles gotta stay out a while longer :-( Though lots of people whine about winter due to its accompanying list of ailments, I enjoy winter the most in Mumbai - the only time we don't sweat much. And yes, our beloved politicians are making their presence felt through all their ugly and loud posters. But, wonder if Mumbaikars will actually turn up to vote, instead of disappearing to nearby week-end get-aways for a family picnic. Regards, RameshRead More
