Amrita, Based on assumptions, you shouldn't be writing such comments. BTW, is it your fear that made you give this review a rating of 'somewhat useful' or you really did not find it worth it? This is the only review written by me which is not being read by many ppl thanks to your comment. Salute ...your power of driving ppl away and wish you were 'fair' and not just so whimsical. Thanks for reading and rating though.Read More

-> In an effort to evoke the feelings of humanity, there are small snippets thrown in all over the narrative – the way a rioter lets a Muslim girl escape, the way young newspaper hawker who saves Sarika and her daughter from rioters, the relationship between the Parsi family and others pre-riots ...and post-riots, the act of redemption by one Hindu guy by telling the truth about his role in the riots, a Gandhian old man trying to console the American guy. There are lots of things. Not a single frame has been wasted. -> Naseer is arguably one of the best actors Indian film industry has seen. Sarika, though not considered in the same league, has matched Naseer scene for scene and bettered herself in the scene where she testifies before inquiry commission. Naseer’s best scene is the one where he searches for his lost child amongst the pile of corpses. (A minor thing in overall shot execution – one of the kid corpses tries hard to keep his eyes closed but you can see his eyeballs moving at a rapid pace). The other powerful scene is the one in the theatre (I have already talked about). Sarika excels (and how) in interpreting the emotions of a distraught mother's sorrow without too much of histrionics. It is truly a nation-award worthy performance. The movie ends but doesn’t leave you. It remains with you for days to come. Great effort Dholkia! Read More

Wasted opportunity, huh? The songs come one after the other in quick succession and make you restless. “Ek lo ek muft” is the only weak song. “Maiyya” (Maya = water) “Barso Re” “Aie Hairathe” “Jaage hain” stand apart. The best of the lot is “Tere bin”. My opinion again. ? Technically speaking: ... Camera is terrific. The mastery can be seen in the climax where the camera moves in slow motion. What a breathtaking work by Rajiv Menon! If you observe closely, the lighting has been varied for the first 30 minutes of the movie to give a feel of olden days. The cinematography is too good. The makeup, art direction and other visual elements have been handled beautifully. Editing is particularly disappointing. A couple of songs could have been trimmed like “Aie Hairathye” was. They could have done away with Ek lo ek muft song altogether. The story moves, at times, in chunks of scenes without continuity. Editing has gone awry in this fare. Background music is terrific to say the least. It complements and heightens the mood. Absolutely delightful work done here by Rahman! To sum it up: This is one of those could-have-been-outstanding movies. One interesting remark that I heard was “Guru is not entertaining but is well made” Read More

The plot: A villager from India goes to Turkey to earn his living and does good work too. He wants to start his own company back in India. He struggles his way to the top – starting out as a petty textile trader, then becoming polyester king, then going on to become one of the most influential per...son in Indian business. The story is Dhirubhai’s without dobut. It has been changed and twisted to make it appear “inspired” but not copied; and also to bring about a cinematic experience that is entertaining. How is it made: It is not badly made but it is not as good as you would expect from Mani Ratnam. Unnecessary tracks in the movie ruin the pace (slow but consistent) of the narrative. Mani is a seasoned storyteller and I have by all means very little right to comment on his competence. The Mani Ratnam touch is either missing or a little too much for the story but it is not perfect. The story goes haywire towards the middle, gets back on track but then the end leaves you disappointed. I wouldn’t like a strong business to compare himself to Gandhi for saving his butt. Crap! Acting: Mithun and Abhishek excel. Aishwarya is functional but nothing more than that. It could be a bias but I did not think she did complete justice to her role. The entire cast is competent. Abhishek has given a performance that he wouldn’t be able to match for a long time. He falters in the last scene but the blame is not entirely his – a part of the fault lies with screenplay, concept and execution by the director too. I could imagine Amitabh, SRK, Aamir, or Sanjay Dutt doing a better job of the same scene with all other factors remaining constant. Nonetheless, a powerful performance (and excellent body language) by Aby’s Baby! Mithun puts together a very balanced act. He is one of those actors who can pull off any role. Music: It is good. Allah Rakha Rahman has tried to recreate the magic of older times but Mani has diluted its impact by going in for unimaginative choreography. WasteRead More

11. Madhvan plays S Gurumurthy, a CA hired by Goneka to launch direct attacks against the Reliance group. (Vidya Balan’s track has been put just to change the story a bit and make it emotional) 12. Dhirubhai always called his investors (in IPO) his extended family and so says Gurubhai in the fi...lm. 13. The corporater shown in the film reminded me of Nusli Wadia. There was a tiff between Nusli (Bombay Dyeing) and Dhirubhai. Goneka joined hands with Nusli Wadia later on and went on a rampage against Dhirubhai. Movie hints in similar direction 14. There were lots of cases against Reliance and Dhirubhai could get past most of those except for some taxes that he had to cough up. Gurubhai faces something similar 15. Dhirubhai had a brain attack that paralyzed his right hand. Gurubhai? Ditto. 16. They both gave their speech in a stadium. 17. Both have the same ideology – dream and then work passionately for achieving it. Once you achieve it, think bigger. Another similarity is the way they ran their business – back integration 18. They both started their career in India from a textile market as a small trader There were lots more that I could spot, I have just forgotten most. I will edit this review when I recollect more. Lots of music directors (some of them even good but not so successful) have cried hoarse over Himesh’s music. Baring A.R.Rahman, no music director has openly appreciated Himesh. You know why? Rahman has no competition, he is secure, he knows he is the best. Other music directors are losing their bre...ad to this little man with cap and are frustrated. Aadesh Srivastava for once said Himesh cannot sing and doesn’t give good music. Aadesh who? Yeh! That’s the question to ask. Nothing succeeds like success. Himesh has struggled in films/TV for 15 long years before he got his share of appreciation and recognition. He started his music career with “Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge” (starring Karishma and Salman). Remember “Chhamiya”? Probably, you don’t. The headlines then read “Himesh has 1000 songs in his kittly. Is Rehman listening?” All media hype came down crashing. Many years later, he discovered (or some Mr Datta did) the singer in him. Life’s not been same ever since. We, insecure people in this skeptical world, cannot see someone succeed like the way he has done. We don’t know what makes us hate him but we do. I love his music but I too am ashamed to admit it. Sad but true! Read More
